Summary of Duties
The Chair will be an individual with outstanding academic credentials who can articulate and execute a clear, shared vision for leading and developing the Department, while promoting a broadly shared sense of collegiality, mutual respect, and support within the Department, college, and university. The successful candidate is expected to have developed and may continue to sustain a productive, internationally recognized research and/or extension program complementary to existing Department and college strengths. The Chair is expected to have a record of excellence in conducting and promoting undergraduate and graduate education and is expected to teach at one or both levels. The Chair’s portfolio will include fiscal management of the Department, promoting professional development of faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduate and graduate students statewide, engagement with faculty located at Research and Extension Centers, and participation in industry/stakeholder meetings across the state.

The College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) at Washington State University seeks a distinguished academic leader to be Chair of the Department of Horticulture (https://horticulture.wsu.edu/). Applications are invited for a full-time, 12-month tenure-eligible position to begin July 1, 2020, or as negotiated, at the Pullman, WA campus. The position offers an exciting opportunity for leadership in developing new strategic initiatives and in further advancing established areas of departmental excellence in research, extension, and teaching. Members of the Department conduct research, teaching, and extension activities to train and inform students and stakeholders working in a wide range of horticultural crops that directly contribute more than $4 billion to the state economy. The opportunity to hire new faculty over the next 3 – 5 years will re-shape, strengthen, and define the Department’s role in fulfilling its mission.
The mission of the Department is to develop and promote the adoption of biological discoveries and practical applications to increase productivity and sustainability of horticultural crops to benefit the state of Washington, nation, and world. This mission is accomplished via Department members’ strengths in disciplines including breeding, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, biochemistry, and physiology.

Required Qualifications
- Earned Ph.D. in a fundamental area of modern Plant Science or a related discipline by date of hire.
- Demonstrated record of success in unit leadership and fiscal and personnel management in a department, program, or highly diverse scientific or academic unit.

- Excellent interpersonal communication skills including ability to articulate and implement a strategic vision, demonstrate evidence-based decision making, and critically evaluate program impact
- Demonstrated successful commitment to the recruitment, retention, development, and enrichment of a diverse faculty, staff, and student community
