Job Title:  Community Boating Director (CBD)

General Job Description:  The CBD will ensure the Mission Statement is at the heart of every decision made.  The CBD is responsible for administering the AWA’s programs and maintenance of boats, facilities and assets.

The CBD will report to the President of the AWA Board of Directors (BOD). The CBD will coordinate with the committees which are Development (Communications and Marketing sub committees), Finance, Program (Maintenance sub committee) and Partnering.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:  The CBD will oversee the following;

  • Operate within the AWA budget and ensure all insurances are in place and up-to-date
  • Be present for all BOD monthly meetings,
  • Hire, train, and supervise a seasonal staff of sailing instructors
  • Provide end of season evaluations for paid staff
  • Coordinate with AWA committees for promoting and recruiting members
  • Prepare promotional communications and fundraising
  • Coordinate with AWA committee members for volunteer program management as needed

Year-round Duties:  

  • Maintain positive relationships with the Port, the City of Anacortes, and our partners.  Be the spokesperson and the public persona for AWA.
  • Inform the President of the BOD of issues that might require BOD intervention or advice.
  • Coordinate with the AWA Marketing & Communication Committees for publicity and promotion.
  • Coordinate with the AWA volunteer storage manager in management of upland storage boat yard and dinghy dock storage.
  • Assist AWA volunteers in seeking grant funding for AWA programs.
  • Make presentations on AWA Programs to interested groups and partners.
  • Coordinate with the AWA Development Committee for fund raising and boat donations.
  • Coordinate fleet maintenance throughout the year with the Programs and Maintenance Committees.
  • Other duties as requested and needed.

During the Boating Season (March through October):

  •  Recruit and ensure the training of coaches and staff for programs, supervise programs:
    • High School Sailing and Racing Team
    • Learn To Sail (youth & adults)
    • Advanced & Masters Sailing Program
    • Shore operations at the Donald C. Douglass building (kiosk) and Seafarers’ Memorial Park
  • Supervise local regatta operations and planning with fleet organizers.
  • Supervise kiosk operations, ensuring that revenues are accounted for and deposited correctly.
  • In coordination with the AWA Treasurer and Secretary, ensure that safety and insurance requirements are met for all programs.

During the Off Season (November through February):

  • Coordinate with the Maintenance Committee to maintain the fleet.
  • Coordinate with the Marketing & Communications Committees to organize instruction for community boating seminars or classes.
  • Coordinate with the Development Committee for the Fall Fund Raiser to be held in October/November.
  • Recruit coaches and staff for AWA Programs.
  • Assist with selling donated boats.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the Anacortes waterfront community is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of community waterfront programs or organizations is required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, from potential donors to youth and adult sailors.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Must be able to work independently, prioritize and receive constructive feedback and suggestions from the BOD.
  • Certification and experience as US Sailing Level 1 + instructor preferred but not required at hire date.  AWA will pay for certifications with commitment of job longevity.
  • Experience with and understanding of the Rules of Sailboat Racing, the Rules of the Nautical Road, marine safety, and small boat and motor Maintenance and repair.  The CBD need not be a skilled marine repair technician or skilled sailboat racer, but should understand the scope of both.
