Responsibilities Include:

  • Plan, organize and supervise the daily activities of survey crews
  • Assist in the training of assigned personnel
  • Assure the safety of the survey crews
  • Monitor work in progress and time spent on assignments
  • Perform complex survey calculations
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to surveying and personnel activities
  • Calculate positions to restore lost or destroyed monuments to their correct locations
  • Contact or communicate with various departments, inspectors, contractors, private surveyors, outside organizations, outside agencies and the general public to coordinate work activities and provide or receive information
  • Prepare and maintain maps, files, records and reports related to survey, safety and personnel activities
  • Perform research and prepare legal description for boundary surveys and easements

An equivalent combination to:

  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by college-level course work in engineering or mathematics AND
  • Seven years’ increasingly responsible experience in the area of surveying, including three years’ full-time experience as a Survey Chief of Party*

*A maximum of two years of college-level education in the area of surveying may be substituted for experience on a year-by-year basis

Licenses, Certifications and other Requirements

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter

Knowledge & Skills

  • Ability to learn about the Utilities services and project areas, locations and sources of information concerning previous surveys
  • Field survey methods, techniques and practices including State requirements for various types of survey
  • Advanced math, trigonometry and geometry as related to survey computations
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy when dealing with the public and co-workers
  • Utility organization, operations, policies and objectives
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Health safety regulations
  • Principles and practices of supervision, discipline and training
  • Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Record-keeping techniques including field books
  • Proper method of storing equipment, materials and supplies
  • Analyze situation accurately and adopt an effective course of action
  • Read and understand complex field notes, construction plans and hard copies
  • Interpret and/or prepare complex legal descriptions
  • Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches
  • Accurately perform complex mathematical computations relating to land survey work to include processing GPS vectors and control networks
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Maintain records and prepare reports
  • Perform tasks efficiently from oral or written direction
  • Work independently with little direction
  • Meet schedules and timelines
  • Read, interpret, apply and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Lift heavy objects
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle
  • Operation of a computer terminal and automated surveying equipment
