Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

Location:  Based out of Clackamas, Oregon. Work to be conducted primarily on  streams and rivers within the Sandy and Clackamas River Basins

June 1st, 2021 anticipated start date.

Job Description: What you will do: The primary responsibility of this position will be to conduct salmon spawning surveys, redd surveys, stream habitat surveys, and fish presence surveys throughout the Sandy and Clackamas River Basins.  Duties include:

  • Walk or float streams to count redds and spawning salmon, steelhead, and lamprey.
  • Collect biological samples from dead fish.
  • Electrofish streams for fish presence/absence.
  • Conduct surveys to inventory the physical habitat of streams.
  • Conduct snorkel surveys to inventory juvenile salmonids and other stream fish.
  • Keep accurate and clear data records.
  • Hike into and along streams daily.
  • Requires some use of non-motorized inflatable boats.
  • Requires operation of non-motorized paddle or oar controlled rivercraft in swift water and rapids up to Class III.
  • Work in hot, cold, rainy weather or in rough terrain.
  • Camp or backpack in remote areas.
  • Communicate with the public to gain access to private land and to explain our activities.
  • Coordinate with ODFW district staff.
  • Occasionally assist on other ODFW efforts, such as adult or juvenile salmonid trapping.

Position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day including most weekends and some night work. Position may be physically demanding.

Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for these positions; however we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.g., experience in fish sampling and habitat surveys is preferred, but standardized training will be provided).  Knowledge and background working with GIS and Access databases are also preferred but not required. Knowledge and background operating non-motorized river-craft in swift water streams.  Employees must be self-motivated, willing to work under a variety of conditions, and responsible for the quality of data collected and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences will be given preference for interviews.

Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist.
