The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Product Sales and Leasing Division. The Assistant Division Manager for Product Sales oversees a staff of twelve professionals in our Olympia headquarters and coordinates with our six regions to ensure that we meet our sustainable harvest volumes while delivering operational excellence. To be successful at this position you not only need an understanding of the forest products business, but you also need to showcase outstanding leadership and customer service skills. This position will consistently be representing the agency when speaking to purchasers and the general public, and will have to be able to adapt to those audiences. Duties

Responsibilities:
- Plan, lead and organize the work performed by the Timber Sales section of the Product Sales & Leasing Division.
- Maintain the highest standards of safety, personal/professional and ethical conduct, and support the State’s goals for a diverse workforce.
- Strategic and tactical oversight of the timber sales program statewide, including preparation/presentation of sale proposals to the Board of Natural Resources (BNR);
- Tracking forest product market conditions/trends and developing strategies/standards/procedures to maximize revenue potential on forested State Trust Lands while meeting sustainable harvest targets and related Board and department objectives;
- Continually evaluating timber sales process/tools and working with program/region staff to adjust as necessary to improve operational excellence and minimize risks to trust assets;
- Creating and maintaining productive working relationships with internal program/region staff and external stakeholders including regulators, purchasers, other agencies, tribes and others;
- As one of four members of the division’s leadership team responsible for setting program strategic direction, overseeing implementation of program and department priorities, as well as identifying division and program challenges and working with the leadership team, region and other program staff to determine and implement solutions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in forestry or natural resources; AND at least 5 years experience to include: forest operations and forest products marketing;
OR a combination of education and/or experience equivalent. - At least 3 years supervisory experience.
- Ability to foster and preserve constructive working relationships with internal agency staff as well as regulators, purchasers, and other interested stakeholders.
- Successful working experience in forest products marketing and/or forest management;
- Expertise in wood utilization and the collection and analysis of forest resource information;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Expertise in designing successful workflow processes for highly complex, multiple goal orientated projects;
- Proficient use of computers and agency software; this includes standard programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.

- Assigned duty station is the Natural Resources Building in Olympia; the majority of time (~85%) will be spent indoors. The building environment consists of a cubicle workstation with a computer in an open area that is subject to loud noises from nearby conversations, telephones, ventilation and “white noise”. Occasional travel (~15%) to the various regions is required, which may include field settings. Teleworking is an option for a work setting and requires approval of the Division Manager.
- Position requires a minor amount of traveling (~15%) from Olympia to one of the six regions of the state or to meeting locations within Olympia or adjacent cities/towns. Overnight travel is required in this position when visiting some region offices and field due to long travel distances. Agency vehicles are available for use.
- A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- A Master’s degree in business, forest management, forest economics, or related field;
- Five or more years of forest products marketing experience;
- Expertise and practical working knowledge of negotiating, forecasting, budgeting, trend analysis, and sawmill operations
- Experience working under Washington’s Forest Practices Rules, and familiarity with the DNR State Lands Habitat Conservation Plan
- Ability to use stakeholder satisfaction as a key measure of success;
- Ability to view the success of the organization and team as more important than individual achievements;
- Ability to be accessible and responsive to stakeholder’s needs by phone and email;
- Ability to be receptive to new ideas and adaptable to change.
