The Opportunity
WSDOT Geotechnical Office in Headquarters is currently seeking Transportation Interns in Tumwater, WA. These are intern positions with the Headquarters Engineering Geology Section. The Engineering Geology interns will be assisting with the Fish Passage Scoping Program, the Unstable Slopes Management Program, and design and construction support for project-based work. The Fish Passage Scoping Program includes performing field and office work related to inventory, assessment, and scoping of various fish passage projects on a statewide basis. The Unstable Slopes Management Program includes performing field and office work related to inventory, assessment, and scoping of statewide unstable slopes and related geotechnical assets. Other project work includes a variety of field and office work related to mitigation design and construction support for landslide, rockfall, and other unstable slope projects. Our successful candidates will possess skills to perform work indoors in an office environment and field work outdoors. 
 
What to Expect 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Engineering Geologist Intern will:

  • Research, collect and organize information from published geologic mapping, lidar and aerial imagery, WSDOT databases, geotechnical design reports, and as-built construction documents. 
  • Compile information into organized files and prepares various maps using GIS. 
  • Participate in site visits, geologic reconnaissance, planning geotechnical investigations (including drilling, lab testing, and groundwater monitoring), site characterization, and developing preliminary geotechnical recommendations.
  • Write geotechnical documentation that describes the work conducted and the results of the analysis, summarizes subsurface conditions, and provide preliminary geotechnical recommendations.
  • Travel statewide with overnight stays.
  • Work in adverse conditions over rough terrain, and potentially at heights or in confined spaces.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Completed at least three years or be a recent graduate of a four-year degree program in Geological Sciences, Engineering Geology, or a closely related field which includes coursework in Geologic Field Mapping OR a recently graduated student in a Graduate degree program in Geological Sciences, Engineering Geology, or closely related field. 
  • A valid driver’s license. 
  • The ability to travel overnight and work outside in adverse conditions.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Passed the Fundamentals of Geology ASBOG exam.
  • Strong background in field geology methods 
  • Proficiency with GIS, coursework in engineering geology, and/or engineering

  • These positions require intermittent in-state travel with overnight stays. 
  • These are non-permanent internship opportunities, expected to last up to six (6) months. 
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.   • These positions offer flexible/hybrid remote work options, but the duty station is the HQ Materials Laboratory in Tumwater. In person work at this station is required at least one day per week.
