Summary

The Aspen Global Change Institute is a nonprofit organization with a mission to advance global change science and solutions. As described in our Strategic Plan, the goals of the Institute are to further understanding of human and Earth systems, catalyze solutions at speed and scale, and nurture diverse and inclusive community across research and practice. AGCI programming includes interdisciplinary workshops, cross-cutting research, and technical assistance to practitioners implementing solutions to global change. AGCI was founded in 1989 and is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) organization that supports a network of staff and partners working to implement a mission that is international in scope yet grounded in local contexts and problem domains.

We are seeking a highly innovative and entrepreneurial individual to make an impact on projects related to assessment, climate services, and climate change adaptation.

Position Overview

The Adaptation/Assessment Fellow is a new fellowship position at AGCI established in collaboration with the Science for Climate Action Network (SCAN). Charged with supporting research, communications, and network-building related to climate adaptation and climate assessment, the Adaptation/Assessment Fellow will work with senior adaptation experts and an array of on-the-ground partners to design an assessment of the effectiveness of green infrastructure in managing coastal hazards associated with sea level rise, storm surges, and an array of other climate-related impacts. In addition, this person will coordinate websites, newsletters, meetings, and in-person events to help build a professional affinity group to evaluate the on-the-ground effectiveness of alternative coastal protection green and gray infrastructure. Additional projects related to climate services and assessment may also be incorporated into this portfolio, including those focused on other regional settings such as the U.S. Mountain West.

As an AGCI Fellow, this position will provide opportunities to engage with other AGCI staff and fellows in pursuit of the overarching mission of the Institute. This may include peer-learning with other AGCI staff and fellows, contributing insights from fellowship work to other AGCI programs, and interacting with a broad interdisciplinary mix of scholars and practitioners that collaborate with the Institute.

To fill this role, AGCI is looking for a highly entrepreneurial, well-organized, creative, curious, collaborative, and forward-thinking individual with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience, preferably related to climate change adaptation. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of achievement and experience, with experience on grant research and writing teams.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Lead a systematic assessment involving literature review and expert elicitation on the efficacy of green infrastructure to support coastal adaptation to climate change.
  • Coordinate project team meetings, communications, and engagements related to coastal and national assessment activities.
  • Collaborate on other climate services and assessment programming at AGCI.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in fields related to climate change adaptation, coastal management, environmental engineering, or planning
  • Knowledge and experience with assessments of climate change impacts and response options
  • Strong scientific and public communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Skill using software/methods for collection, management, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving abilities
  • Commitment to collaboration and community building
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and interpersonal skills
  • Desire to join and foster the growth of a dynamic nonprofit organization

Work Schedule & Compensation

Start date is flexible within the fall 2021. AGCI will consider flexible FTEs and joint appointments. AGCI operates a primary office in Basalt, Colorado, with satellite offices in Michigan, Washington, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts as part of its Institute Without Walls approach. The initial period of this fellowship is one year, with an option to renew for a second year conditional on exemplary performance and funding availability.

Compensation: Benefits and salary dependent on experience and location of employment. Anticipated salary range is $60,000 – $70,000.
