Description
Performs entry-level technical accounting work and assists with the maintenance of accounting records to provide senior level accounting technician(s) with necessary financial information.

Examples of Duties

  • Performs entry level accounting activities in the areas of budgeting, payroll, grants, report compilation and analysis and other assigned accounting areas.
  • Prioritizes and coordinates work with other departments, staff, and agencies to ensure timely completion of work and deadlines.
  • Coordinates the preparation and maintenance of journals and ledgers for assigned activities ensuring the classification and distribution of items to proper accounts per legal requirements and County financial policies and procedures. Edits, reconciles discrepancies, and corrects irregularities to prepare balanced ledgers for the department.
  • Produces routine revenue/expenditure reports. 
  • Assists in the annual departmental budget process. 
  • Assists Senior Accounting Technician with the coordination of grant budgets and contracts by monitoring expenditures.
  • Provides assistance and information within the scope of knowledge and authority.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Performs other related work as required.
  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Accounting principles, methods and terminology.
  • Governmental and cost accounting and budgeting principles and procedures. 
  • Grant accounting procedures and processes.
  • Basic data processing principles and accounting applications.
  • MS Suite

Ability to:

  • Analyze, interpret and prepare accounting reports and financial statements using generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies, vendors, and the general public.
  • Apply and adapt established accounting methods to a variety of financial transactions.
  • Set work priorities.
  • Physically perform the essential functions of the job with or without accommodation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
HS Diploma/GED, with one (1) year of accounting education
(and/or one (1) year of accounting experience, preferably in the public sector.) 

WORKING CONDITIONS
Duties are primarily performed in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer with frequent interruptions, usually for delivery of service to the public. Duties also include meeting the requirements of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual deadlines for submission of various records and reports, often under stressful conditions. Travel is required on a regular basis to complete the voucher process, pick up mail, and attend meetings. May involve contact with aggravated and sometimes argumentative individuals.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
