The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking an Assistant Region Manager in our Northeast Region, headquartered in Colville WA. This position is responsible for our Ecosystems, Recreation, Natural Areas, HCP, Ag and Assets programs.  If you’re interested in a career with opportunities to manage and enhance Washington’s recreational lands and natural areas, and implement agency policy for generating revenue for our state’s beneficiaries (e.g., schools in your hometown), this job might be for you! The ideal candidate will bring strong program management skills to the Northeast Region Management team. This position manages trust assets on approximately 565,000 acres of forest and rangelands in Northeast Region. The total budget allotment this position controls on an annual basis is $3,335,800. The successful candidate for this position will thrive in a supportive team environment and collaboratively works with program managers in divisions to strategically plan for and develop performance measures of several dynamic teams – including recreation, ecosystems, agriculture, and land leasing. The duty station for the position is Colville Washington. This position is primarily an office based position, with occasional field days and site visits and off site meetings which may require some travel across the geographic area of Northeast Washington.

Responsibilities:
Some of the essential responsibilities of the Assistant Region Manager include:

  •  Provides strong and accessible leadership to 8 direct report staff and 11 second line staff in the regions managed lands programs.
  • Manages the region’s grazing and agricultural programs to optimize revenue to trust beneficiaries while ensuring the most cost-effective use of resources consistent with the trust mandate and sound natural resources stewardship principles.
  • Manages the region’s recreation program to promote public access and recreation that is compatible with trust objectives.
  • Oversee revenue generated from the sale of rock products and leasing communication sites, irrigated and dryland agriculture, forage for grazing, and potentially green energy sites.
  • Manages ten Natural Area Preserves and two Natural Resource Conservation Areas within Northeast Region.

Required Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Natural Resources Management, Agricultural Management or closely related field; AND four (4) years of professional level experience with a demonstrated progression in leadership responsibilities in the areas of forest and/or range management and personnel management.
    OR An associate’s degree in recreation management or natural resources management or closely related field; AND six (6) years of professional level experience with a demonstrated progression in leadership responsibilities in the areas of recreation and/or range management and personnel management.
  • Key Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills: General
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain a strong rapport with individuals both inside and outside the agency.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and accomplish objectives within given time restraints.
    • Strong background in budget development and implementation
    • 4 years of strong supervisory experience including coaching, mentoring, training, setting priorities, and evaluating performance.
    • Prior work following civil service rules, federal and state laws and collective bargaining agreements, and department policies.
    • Knowledge of contract and lease development and negotiations
    • Experience in project planning and implementation

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting (60%) and in other meeting locations or field environments (40%). Some field visits may require walking over steep and rugged terrain and in inclement weather. While in an office setting position does not come in contact with any hazardous chemicals other than standard surface cleaners and adhesives. While in field setting, position comes into occasional contact with motor fuels, lubricants, cleaners, and possibly herbicides.
  • Requires some travel including trips between the region office and district work centers within the region. Position requires occasional overnight travel between the region office and DNR headquarters in Olympia, or other region offices around the state.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
