Position Purpose

The Sustainability Program Assistant develops and oversees implementation of student experiential learning and community building programs for the Sustainability Office; plays an important role in developing and coordinating key collaborative programs between the Dartmouth Sustainability Office, the Irving Institute for Energy and Society, and other campus partners, and is responsible for implementing assessment of the effectiveness of Sustainability Office experiential learning and community building programs with existing office systems and tools and with new tools and strategies.

Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies or related field required.
  • Previous experience organizing events.
  • Experience in the implementation of sustainability initiatives, campus initiatives and/or environmental projects.
  • Knowledge of Dartmouth Sustainability Office student programs, initiatives, and past events.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a fast-paced, innovative team.
  • Excellent ability to prioritize, and to manage multiple projects, and people.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Positive, solution orientation.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, and independent judgment.
  • Must have a valid US driver’s license and must remain in good standing as a Dartmouth approved driver.
  • Knowledge of basic communication tools, various social media platforms, and Google & Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to adapt personal and professional schedule to Dartmouth’s year-round calendar.

Intern Management: Oversees Sustainability Office student interns and group leaders and supports effective implementation of student projects by providing guidance, mentorship, training, and relationship building as necessary across the campus including Sustainable Dartmouth and First-Year Program; leads outreach and student participant selection, training, and onboarding; reviews student timecards weekly, and reviews end of the term debrief form reports and share with team; develops programs and events to build cohesion and collaboration across student teams and projects.

Support Irving Institute Partnerships: Spring Energy Immersion Trip Leader- coordinates and runs the Spring Energy Immersion Trip including outreach to students and participant selection; identifying, scheduling and coordinating faculty and guest speakers and field trips; and facilitating post-trip reflection and sharing. Supports the development of new Winter immersion trip. Energy Programming in the Irving Institute Building-develops and supports programming and events around sustainability and energy in service to our new home in the Irving building and our partnership with IIES; supports the Sustainability Office/Irving Institute Senior Leadership Program.

Sustainability Program Support: Supports the Moving Sale, EcoCroo, Brew HaHa, and EarthWeek committee oversight; develops and manages the Sustainability Action Program (First-year program) in conjunction with other staff members; uses strong interpersonal skills to build relationships and work collaboratively with key campus partners in support of the above initiatives; engages in, and sometimes facilitates, strategic planning discussions about Sustainability Office growth, strategy, and assessment; serves as an enthusiastic resource to student, faculty, and staff collaborators; contributes to, refines, and implements top notch, innovative ideas that help make Dartmouth a sustainability leader.

General Office Support: Provides additional support for Sustainability Office communications, events, and administrative tasks including responding to inquiries via email and office phone, booking spaces & catering for events, picking up event supplies, and helping produce content for social media postings and blog posts; is a positive, solution oriented, supportive, and collaborative team member.
