Our Salmon Recovery Policy Lead,  

  • Provides high level consultation to the Director and the Fish and Wildlife Commission.
  • Strengthens relationships, improves communication, builds, and expands strategic partnerships to promote the department’s budget and policy agenda for salmon recovery. 
  • Is the Director’s designee and department representative on salmon recovery policy issues.
  • Works closely with other resource programs and coordinates across the department to ensure the Governor’s office, Tribes, NOAA, Regional Salmon Recovery Boards, and recreational/commercial fishers are adequately informed on WDFW’s salmon recovery priorities.  
  • Ensures there is a cohesive department strategic vision, budget, and policy priorities for salmon recovery. 
  • Ensures there is external partner understanding of and buy-in for department priorities, and that these priorities are reflected in the Governor’s Office, tribal, federal, and state agency budget, and policy priorities.  
  • Partners with Public Affairs to seek public support for salmon recovery.
  • Is responsible for maintaining and expanding state and federal budgets for salmon recovery actions.  

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:    
    1. Working environment is a busy office setting, most tasks will involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    2. The duty station for this position is in Olympia, WA. Due to the Governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order due to the pandemic, many of our positions are currently working remotely, or a combination of office and remote.  When the Governor lifts the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order for state employees, combinations of office or telework may be considered.
  • Schedule:   
    1. Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
    3. A flexible work schedule can be considered at the candidate’s request – subject to supervisory approval.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Travel will be required throughout the State to attend trainings, meetings, and conferences.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Degree in biology, environmental science, or public administration or a related field.

AND

Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience: 

  • In policy and coordination. 
  • Working on salmon recovery and environmental policies with state, tribal, or local government. 
  • Facilitating, coordinating, or convening diverse groups of people to achieve shared goals. 

AND

  • Experience working with elected officials (tribal, local, state, or federal).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices related to applicable laws and regulations and basic functions of a state or local government.
