The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northeast Region. We are searching for a Natural Resource Camp Manager for the Airway Heights Corrections Camp (AHCC). The incumbent we are looking for is someone who is a proven team player, has experience in DNR Wildfire and Department of Corrections (DOC) operations and displays an effective form of leadership and the ability to build and maintain team cohesion across multiple agencies.The primary purpose of the Airway Heights Camps program is to provide 6 fully qualified 10 person crews to conduct initial attack wildfire suppression. The Airway Heights Camp is centered in the busiest area for wildfire response in the State of Washington. The initial attack crews are a critical suppression resource for the protection of life and property in this high risk area. The highest priority for this position is to create a culture of safety in the correctional camp operation. The Airway Heights Camp program also conducts numerous forest health, wildfire fuels reduction, silvicultural, wildlife, conservation and other natural resource projects. The camp manager is responsible to make sure all DNR deliverables and other agency projects are completed within budget and established timeframes. This requires the incumbent to foster positive working relationships and provide quality customer service.

Responsibilities:
The Natural Resource Camp Manager for AHCC is responsible for the following:- Administer the DNR operations at AHCC in partnership with DOC.
- Support safety efforts including accountability and emergency preparedness.
- Ensure quality wildfire and natural resource management services are provided to the agencies and organizations served.
- Serve as a primary contact for DOC management staff at Airway Heights.
- Allocate crew resources to meet project and program objectives and deliverables.
- Monitor project and region budgets to ensure camp spending is within spending limits and funding allocation.
- Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide for effective recruitment, training, supervision and recognition of AHCC team members.

Required Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in Forest Management or Natural Resources Management; and five years of professional level experience with a demonstrated progression in leadership responsibilities in the areas of land and resources management and/or personnel management; OR
An associate’s degree in forest management or natural resources management; and seven years of professional level experience with a demonstrated progression in leadership responsibilities in the areas of land and resources management, personnel management. - Minimum of one year of team leadership experience.
- Experience prioritizing, assigning, and tracking work assignments.
- Experience working effectively with a diverse range of internal and external partners.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively in writing and orally with clients ranging from field staff and foresters; to customers, stakeholders, and other agency counterparts.
- Working knowledge of forestry, including basic knowledge of forestry fundamentals as they relate to performing silvicultural work and forest fire suppression, such a reading maps, sampling techniques, and understanding of silvicultural objectives.
- Work under minimal supervision within the context of broad agency policies.
- Provide second level-supervision over multiple work units with one or more supervisors.
- Use a mix of tactical and strategic thinking to address various budget, fixed asset, human resource and customer service issues.
- Develop, recommend, and implement agency strategies, policies, and resource allocation.
- Maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders and organizations.
- Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
- The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
- A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates may be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- Establish and maintain residency within 1 hour of duty station at Airway Heights Camp.
- Prior to hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position. Currently background checks are required to be completed at a minimum of every 5 years.
Our ideal candidate will also have the qualifications listed below:
- Working knowledge of the Washington State correctional system, and laws and practices governing custody of offenders.
- Working knowledge in personnel management principles and merit system rules, and employee union agreements.
- Working knowledge of agency policies practices and procedures.
- Working knowledge of forest management objectives, timber management planning and silvicultural principles.
- Working knowledge of wildland fire suppression tactics .
- Experience with staff month and dollar budget development.
- Experience assessing training needs, and developing, delivering, and tracking trainings.
- Maintain the highest standards of personal/professional and ethical conduct.
