sustainable design—in this era of social and environmental upheaval, the pursuit of sustainability is vital, and design thinking is an essential part of it. The documents and links in this site are explorations of those large statements and ways to embody them in grounded work.
physics—My Ph.D. is in statistical mechanics, a major field of fundamental physics. My engagement over 40 years has been more and more with physics as it plays out in the everyday world, especially in large and small buildings and the vital human activities that take place in them.
setting—I have been a long-time Evergreen faculty member, starting in 1972 and moving to emeritus status in 2012, which has meant less and less teaching and more and more scholarship and writing. Over the course of these decades, Evergreen’s feisty, irreverent, deeply serious approach to undergraduate education—team-taught interdisciplinary study of significant themes and problems—has taught me as much or more than I have taught others.
