During our second week in Jamaica we traveled to Saint Thomas where we visited The Source Farm Foundation and Ecovillage, 63 acres of land that have been cultivated with a permaculture lens. The property includes over ten natural building structures including four monolithic domes. Throughout the four days that we spent with Nicola Shirley-Phillips, cofounder of The Source Farm Ecovillage, we learned about the history of The Source Farm, their social permaculture practices, and their vision for the future.
Provided with an incredible opportunity to give back during our time in Jamaica, we were invited to help The Source Farm in collaboration with the GWG Conservancey with post-hurricane clearing to restore an irrigation system for milling breadfruit flour. The GWG Conservancy sits on 370 acres of land that was originally part of the estate of Jamaican National Hero, George William Gordon, and is now focused on sustainable forest management and organic agriculture.
