Class 5 Dice Rolling

You have 10 minutes to complete this task. You may want to work with a partner, but not required.

  • Obtain one 6-sided dice and a tally sheet.
  • Use the following scheme: Roll the dice two times. If the first roll comes up A and the second roll comes up B, make a tally mark in (A, B). So if the first roll came up 5 and the second roll came up 2, you would make a tally mark in (5, 2). This simulates rolling two 6-sided dice once. Note: this would be easier if we had different color or otherwise distinguishable dice. We don’t, so instead we’ll use this method.
  • Each person rolls the dice 72 times to get 36 (A, B) results. Mark the tally on your sheet.
  • After completing the dice rolls, sum up the tally marks in each box and get a total for that box. Also, add up across the rows and enter the result in the Experiment column for that row.
  • Enter your individual microstate results into this spreadsheet. Take care to make sure you are entering in the right boxes.
  • Return your dice and see if you can help someone complete the task, perhaps by assisting them in entering their results into the spreadsheet.

  • The Calendar page is accessible via the main navigation bar.
  • There, you can find a link to the Week 3 Reading Response form and Problem Set #3.
  • Reading Responses are due 10am Monday.
  • Problem Set #2 Solutions will be posted to the Calendar page by Saturday evening.
  • Reminder: Problem Set #1 and Problem Set #2 are due 1pm Mon. Jan. 22.
  • Reminder: Our first Quiz starts promptly at 1pm on Mon. Jan. 22.

Formula card for Quiz

  • You may bring one single personally prepared 3 inch by 5 inch note card with you to the quiz.
    • You may write on both sides of the card.
    • It’s important that you personally prepare the note card.
    • Please take advantage of preparing the note card as a learning opportunity.
    • You may put anything on your note card that you choose, as long as you have personally prepared it.
    • I do not plan to collect your note card.
  • Note cards are cumulative: you may prepare a new note card for each quiz, and bring note cards you prepared for previous quizzes with you.
  • On the cumulative final exam in Week 10, you will be allowed to bring one single 8.5inch by 11inch note sheet (you may write on both sides of the sheet), but not your note cards.

Quiz 1/2, 1pm Mon. Jan. 22

The first Quiz is Monday January 22 starting promptly at 1pm. This Quiz covers all the material from Week 1 and Week 2, which includes the Week 1 and 2 Reading and Reading Responses, material covered in Class 1, 2, and 3 (we didn’t cover much in Class 1 as that was the first day) including ICE-2 and ICE-3, and Problem Sets #1 and #2.

You may bring a formula card for the Quiz.

Reading Response Reminder

A reminder that Reading Responses are due on Mondays by 10 am.

  • For the Week 1 Reading Response, there was an excellent response rate: 26/31 students responded on time, with a few responses coming in after the due time (which was non-standard for that first week)
  • The response rate for the Week 2 Reading Response (which was due by 10 am Mon. Jan. 15, the regular due time) was not as strong: 12/31 students responded on time, with a few responses coming in late.
  • I’ve posted my answers/your (anonymized) responses at the Calendar page.

Week 1 Reading Responses

  • You can read my responses (in bold) to this week’s Reading Response questions, followed by your (anonymized) answers, which are now posted to the Calendar page or by clicking here (You’ll need to be logged in to the website to access).
  • Thanks to those of you who completed the Reading Responses. There was a very good rate of completion, but some room for improvement.
  • Some comments:
    • Keep your answers as brief as you can while still answering the question. There are many good models from your classmates who answered the questions correctly, completely, and concisely – try to follow those models, or my answers (sometimes my answers are too brief as they mostly serve as pointers to the text).
    • Avoid using fancy formatting; if it doesn’t get lost or mangled in the web form, it will get lost or mangled when I create the document for posting.
  • A reminder that all subsequent Reading Responses are due Mondays at 10am.
