Week 13 schedule

Due to the second physics candidate and the first math candidate, we have modifications to the week 13 schedule. I recognize the Thursday schedule in particular may prove problematic if you have already made out-of-class commitments after 3 – please let me know in advance if this is a problem for you.

  • Mon. Jan. 23: 9 – 11 Quiz/Workshop in CAL West. 12:15 – 1:15 LA/QM in CAL West. 1:30 – 2:30 EM in Lab 1 054 (Candidate Teaching Demo).
  • Tue. Jan. 24: 9 – 11 LA/QM in Lab 1 054. 12:00-1:00 Candidate Public Presentation in Sem II E1107. 1:30 – 3:30 LA/QM in CAL West.
  • Wed. Jan. 25: 9 – 11 & 11:30 – 1 EM.
  • Thu. Jan. 26: 9 – 11 P/S. 12:00-1:00 Math Candidate Public Presentation in Sem 2 B1107. 1:30 – 3:00 LA/QM. 3:00 – 4:00 EM & LA/QM Workshop.

Week 13 Reading Assignment

For Week 13, please read the following:

  • EM: Griffiths 2.3-2.5. Reminder: video lectures here.
  • LA: Lay 4.1-4.7 (optional: 2.8-2.9, which summarize 4.1-4.7). Watch Essence of Linear Algebra: Chapter 6, Footnote on nonsquare matrices, Chapter 9; Strang: The Big Picture of Linear Algebra.
  • QM: in preparation for starting QM in week 4, read Taylor Ch. 10, Townsend Ch.1, Feynman Volume III Ch. 5.
  • Remember to use nb.mit.edu (info on how to access here) or check with faculty for alternatives. Complete first pass of reading and enter annotations (questions, responses, requests for class time) by Mon. 9am and update through week as need.

EM Problem Set #2

EM PS#2 to be completed in your EM PSN (Problem Set Notebook) by noon Sun. Jan. 22. All problems from Griffiths, Introduction to Electrodynamics, 4th edition.

EM PS#2: 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.9, 2.12, 2.14, 2.15, 2.16, 2.17, 2.18, 2.46

LA Problem Set #2

LA PS#2 to be completed in your LA PSN (Problem Set Notebook) by noon Sun. Jan. 22. This week, all problems from Lay, Linear Algebra and its applications, 5th edition.

LA Problem Set #2: (problems connected with underlines are linked)

  • 2.1: 11, 15, 16, 17, 27, 28
  • 2.2: 6, 9, 10, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 38 (for 33, 34, proofs can be rigorous or plausible, your choice).
  • 2.3: 11, 12, 33, 34
  • 2.4: 6, 15, 21, 22

Key access to Lab 1 054A

  • You can pick up a key fob for access to our physics cave from Key Services, which is at the first floor of Lab 2 near the entrance with the elevator. You will need photo id (Evergreen ID preferred).
  • If you already have an electronic fob for your on-campus job or other, access to 054A has been added.

Hidden Figures!

  • I’m excited that so many of you will be able to join our optional social outing to watch the movie Hidden Figures on Monday January 16 at 10am at the Century Olympia movie theater located in the Capital Mall.
  • Please feel free to let your family and friends know; it would be fun if they could join us.
  • The movie has “reserved seating” which means that you don’t just buy a ticket to enter the theater, but you are actually purchasing a particular seat. I’m not sure how much this matters, but if you care, you can purchase a seat online in advance, though there is a (somewhat ridiculous) “convenience fee”.
