Spring Python Programming Agreement Draft

  • Those of you in the spring quarter Python Programming Option should look over the draft agreement, available here.
  • Full editing is not turned on but commenting is, so anyone can add in a comment, or reply to one.
  • Please read it over carefully and make or reply to any comments on items that require clarification or that you would like to discuss further.
  • We will collectively sign the final version of the document, indicating our agreement to its terms, in our first class meeting of spring quarter.

Spring Quarter First Day!

  • Please check out our updated Spring Schedule.
  • Our first class meeting starts promptly at 9am on Monday April 3 in CAL West.
  • All students are expected to attend.
  • We’ll spend up to the first 30 minutes on syllabus/logistics discussion.
  • The remaining time in the morning session will be spent on the Exam 2 Re-do.
  • During the lunch break, we’ll have an optional Reading Group meeting, where we’ll discuss strategies for engaging with the reading including reading notes. Reading Group will meet in the CAL from 11:15 – 12:15.
  • The afternoon is as on the schedule:
    • From 12:30 – 1:30, we’ll meet in the CAL for EM, where we’ll go over Griffiths 7.1.
    • From 1:45 – 2:45, we’ll meet in the CAL for QM, where we’ll go over Townsend 6.1 – 6.5.

Spring First Day Exam Re-do

  • As discussed during Conference, we’ll have an Exam 2 Re-do opportunity during our morning session on the first day of spring quarter, Mon. Apr. 3
  • You will see new versions of questions from the EM and LA/QM Exam 2: the questions will cover the same topics but not be identical (e.g. using Biot-Savart law to calculate a magnetic field, for a different current configuration, or a time-evolution question).
  • You will be asked to choose 2 – 3 questions (from each subject) that you had the most difficulty with on the original exams, and complete those questions. So you can target your studies to those particular topics.
  • You will be able to use your note-sheets, inside covers of Griffiths, calculators, etc. – the same resources you had access to during the original exam sessions.

LA/QM and EM Exam 2 Revisions

(republished to bump up) In case you would like to get started on exam revisions early, here are the questions from:

Guidelines:

  • Revisions are due at your Conference. The extension policy is so generous that everyone who wants one automatically gets an extension to the first day of spring quarter. If you are leaving the program at the end of winter, the extension policy can’t be quite so generous.
  • You may choose to revise any exam questions you like, but must revise the entire question.
  • Revisions to multiple choice/matching/ranking/fill in the blank type questions must include a full explanation (simply choosing the correct response is insufficient).
  • Revisions should be of very high quality. Though not required to by typeset, they should be as carefully presented as you can make them be, given time constraints. Revised solutions must be perfectly clear, complete, and correct to be considered.
  • You may use any resource to prepare your revised solution. HOWEVER…
    • …Revised solutions must display your personal understanding of the material. This means that you must personally understand every step that you write down, and individually produce the content of your final submitted revised solution.

Week 20 Problem Set Collaborative Solutions with notes

  • I’ve added notes to your Collaborative Problem Set Solutions for EM PS#9; please recall that you need to be logged in to access these.
  • Please compare the solutions in your Problem Set Notebook to these solutions, updating or correcting as you need to. If you disagree or would like further clarification, please send me an email.
  • Note: I’ll do a final EM PSN check during EM Exam 2 on Mon. Mar. 20: I’ll look at EM PS#8 and PS#9. If you didn’t submit your QM PSN for a check of PS#5 and PS#6 during QM Exam 2, I’ll accept them during Monday’s exam.

Week 20 PS#9 Solutions Assignments

  • PS#9 Solutions Assignments can be accessed here.
  • Note that you will need to be logged in to our program web-site to access the page linked above. If not logged-in, you can do so via this link.
  • Note that many problems are assigned to more than one person. People assigned to the same problem are welcome to work together and submit one solution, or work separately and submit two.

QM PS#6 solutions

  • For studying purposes, here are some solutions to the QM PS#6 questions, most of which were gone over in class or were outlined; please recall that you need to be logged in to access these.
  • Please compare the solutions in your Problem Set Notebook to these solutions, updating or correcting as you need to. As usual, there are multiple approaches to these problems.
  • Note: I’ll do a final PSN check during Exam 2: for QM, I’ll look at PS#5 (and PS#6, which we’re completing in class) during QM Exam 2 on Thu. Mar. 16; for EM, I’ll look at PS#8 and PS#9 during EM Exam 2 on Mon. Mar. 20.
