Professor, English
Grossmont College
El Cajon, California
I am a faculty member in the English department at Grossmont College. Since I began in 2006, I have had the opportunity to teach in interdisciplinary links at the developmental and transfer levels with Reading, Math, Chemistry, Counseling, Child Development, and Communication.
In addition to teaching in our long-standing learning communities program, Project Success, I also co-coordinated our first-year experience program, The Freshman Academy. This program seeks to offer a rich learning environment for first-year students by integrating student services and instruction. As coordinator for the campus-wide One Theme Project, I chaired a committee of instructional and student services professionals focused on creating integrative learning opportunities for students across their campus experience and throughout their college careers.
Currently, as President of the Academic Senate, I have had the opportunity to work with faculty, staff, administrative and student leaders on College and District-wide projects, including the development of our 6-year strategic plan, the East County Educational Alliance (a regional “promise” program), the evaluation of the institution’s “learning outcomes,” and the development of college-wide degree and certificate program maps as part of our Guided Pathways work.
I have an M.A. and a Ph.D. in English Literature from U.C. Riverside. My emphasis on the relationships between science and literature in the Victorian Era was the beginning of my professional interest in integrative, interdisciplinary work.
I am the father of two girls (ages 10 and 8) and am sometimes told by them that I am a purple monkey.
