I-B: Nuts & bolts of integrative assignments: Let’s get started!

Janine Graziano (Kingsborough Community College) and Joye Hardiman (Washington Center)

Sem II-B 2105

Integrative assignments have become a core feature of learning communities (LC) because they foster opportunities for students to demonstrate integrative thinking, which has been identified as an essential learning outcome for the 21st century (AAC&U, 2008) and which is a focus of our learning community work. This hands-on session will guide participants through the process of developing a culminating integrative project for LCs or LLCs (living-learning communities) through backward design. Imagining the “end” result from the very beginning leads to a curriculum planning process that not only helps faculty design an appropriately scaffolded assignment that engages students while being transparent about the purposes behind the assignment, but can also serve as the framework for designing the learning community itself. So whether you teach or are just interested in learning about integrating curricula, please join us!
