Assignments play many roles in our students’ learning experiences. Assignments are used to build skills, encourage reflective practice, communicate disciplinary and interdisciplinary concepts, demonstrate learning outcomes, and much more. Providing transparency in assignments helps students understand course learning goals and improves their success. Transparent assignments make explicit the purpose of the assignment, the knowledge and skills the student can expect to gain, and the criteria that will be used to evaluate the work. The Transparency in Teaching and Learning (TILT) has demonstrated that this simple change increases students’ success both qualitatively and quantitatively. This session will explore the “why” and “how” for designing transparent assignments aligned with the learning goals of your course, program, or degree.
