Going beyond metrics: The power of qualitative assessment

Chris Calienes – Kingsborough Community College

Traditional metrics are useful to measure whether our students are staying enrolled or earning degrees.  Furthermore, surveys can help us better understand our students’ retention and graduation patterns.  Yet good metrics and surveys should elicit more questions than they answer. The following short presentation outlines an example of how at Kingsborough CC we explored some of the questions brought forth by student and faculty equity survey findings by conducting structured focus groups where we tapped into the most valuable source of information about how we can better serve our students: the students themselves.
