I hope this email finds you well on this snowy Valentine’s Day!
I facilitate the Kennedy Creek Core Committee that is stewarding the long-term vision and artistic upgrade for the Kennedy Creek Natural Area. This project centers the Squaxin history, land stewardship, leadership and voice and we have a Squaxin artist and his team designing and creating carvings for the area. To capture the artist’s process over time, we are looking for a young videographer/photographer or up-and-coming media creative. This person would be taking periodic video and photos of the artist’s process as they:
- Design 14’x20′ sculpted entryway commemorating the salmon life cycle and its connection to WA tribes and the Kennedy Natural Area
- Harvest, transport and process 100,000 board feet of old growth red or yellow cedar for the carving work
- Establish and prep the carving work space on Squaxin reservation and build necessary infrastructure and tools.
- Begin carving the entryway.
- Occasionally join the Core Committee as part of visioning for the upgrades to the Natural Area
We are ideally looking for young indigenous media creatives who can work on the project through June or even September as the timelines flex on the project. Some travel and outdoor site work would be involved and they would need to have their own or access to equipment. This is a paid internship opportunity and it might not be in alignment with TESC academic quarters.
It would be a great fit for someone studying with a focus in film/media, and interest in landscape architecture, native studies, cultural art/traditional ecological knowledge. Do you know of any students whom you might recommend? I’d also appreciate the names of faculty in the longhouse or Native studies program whom I could reach out to directly.
Thanks so much!
