Coordinating Group Meeting 4/27/20

The Coordinating Group convened once again on Monday, April 27 (week five); 22 people were in attendance.

In the first hour (of our two hour meeting), we reviewed the elements of a model (below) and, as a group, debriefed the week 4 faculty meeting.  For access to the group notes that were generated from that debrief, click here (it will take you to a shared Word document in OneDrive).

In the second hour, we reviewed data from Hanover Research, from Evergreen’s Institutional Research, and from the Blue Sky data from Fall and Winter quarters to discuss potential curricular clusters of note (see below post for presentation of data).  We then broke into small groups for discussion around curricular areas.

The Coordinating Group will convene again on Wednesday, May 13th to continue the work of reviewing and incorporating feedback into the draft model we have.  Stay tuned!

Hopes for upcoming faculty meetings where Big Bets are discussed:

    • Week 6 – focus on curriculum
    • Week 8 – provide a comprehensive updated model
    • Week 9 – possible added faculty meeting on 5/27 for further deliberation on the model (if week 8 suggests this is wise)
    • Week 10 – final deliberation on model + advisory vote

When considering models for the “Evergreen of 2030,” four components need to be considered
Model example from Larry Geri (just an example, not a final proposal!)
Model example from David McAvity (again, just an example, not a final proposal!)

Tacoma Blue Skies 1/7/20

Provost Jen Drake and Emily Gray, Special Assistant to the Provost, had the pleasure of presenting “Blue Sky” conversations at the Tacoma Program on January 7th for both the morning and evening Lyceum. The vast majority of participants in both groups were students, with some faculty and staff participation as well.

The guiding questions given to participants were “What are your Big Bet ideas for the future of Evergreen-Tacoma/Evergreen-Olympia?” and “What could Evergreen-Tacoma/Olympia do to attract and support adult learners across undergraduate degree programs?”

New Year, Project Updates

Greetings from 2020.  We are all getting settled back into the office and are beginning to plan for the work ahead.  The coordinating group will have our first meeting of Winter Quarter on Monday, January 6th, and we’ll hold our next set of community conversations–“blue sky conversations”–on Monday, January 13th from 3-5pm in Sem II B2105 and Wednesday, January 15th, 1-3pm in Sem II B2105.

We will also be convening a feasibility group to determine the financial and other resource investment that may be needed for ideas going forward.

We look forward to working with everyone on this important–and exciting!–project before us.  We will be making a special effort to engage students as we continue our work, including going to various student events, engaging student groups, and continuing to welcome students to join our coordinating group meetings.  As always, we’re happy to answer any questions you have at bigbets@evergreen.edu.

Happy New Year!
