The Evergreen State College Master of Public Administration is honored to recognize Senator Jessica Bateman as the 2025 Public Official of the Year. Senator Bateman’s dedication to public service and her unwavering commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society make her a deserving recipient of this award.
Senator Bateman currently represents the 22nd Legislative District, which includes Olympia and the surrounding areas. Her career in public service began as a legislative assistant in the Washington House of Representatives from 2012 to 2015. She was then elected to the Olympia City Council, where she served as Mayor Pro Tem. In 2021, Jessica was elected to the Washington House of Representatives, and in 2025, she assumed office as a member of the Washington State Senate.
Senator Bateman has also served Thurston County in other ways, including by being a member of the GRuB board and the Olympia Planning Commission. Beyond her elected public service, Senator Bateman has worked as a community organizer, community impact director for the United Way of Thurston County and as a policy advisor for community health centers in Washington. Last, but not least, Senator Bateman is a double Greener, completing a BA in environmental studies and a Master of Public Administration from the Evergreen State College.
