Week 2 math assignments

In Week 2 we will be covering sections 1.2-1.4 of the textbook.  Here are the associated problems.  The turn-in problems are boldfaced (see NEWS below):

1.2: 2, 3, 6, 7,9, 13, 20, 22, 25, 33

1.3: 1, 2, 7, 9, 13, 15, 16, 17, 22, 25

1.4: 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 15, 16, 24, 25, 26, 33, 34

NEWS: Having talked to many of you who are not able to submit math hw on campus on Friday (and therefore need to submit on Thursday) we have revised our homework policy to try to accomodate this need.  We will now tell you the turn-in problems (to be turned in by Friday 3 pm) at the moment when the problems are announced, without waiting until after the workshops.  This will allow folks who need to finish those problems before they leave campus Thursday more lead time for this work.

However, we’d like to remind you of the original reason we had wanted to announce these problems later–we are concerned that you will only solve the turn-in problems, which means you will not get enough practice with the material.  So, please be sure to make time for working all the problems in your homework notebook.  The quiz on Mondays will consist of problems very similar to particular homework problems, not limited to turn-ins.

Customized problems in MasteringPhysics

Some problems in MasteringPhysics have randomized variables, which means that the numbers in your version of the problem will be different than your classmates. This gives you the opportunity to work closely with classmates and tutors as you are figuring out how to do the problem but then to check for yourself what you have learned to do by applying your skills and knowledge to a customized version of the problem.
