Glacial Heritage Preserve: Restoration Work Party

We will be pulling broom along the edge of the forest that boarders the Black River and Glacial Heritage’s prairie. We will also continue our acorn collection efforts in this area. Our last acorn collection attempt was thwarted (or at least significantly reduced) by a bear that had munched its way through our collection area the day prior to our collection attempt. We aim to find lots (or some) acorns to assist in restoring oak woodlands across our historic prairie lands.

We look forward to your help!

 Please Note:

We want to keep everyone safe. Please do not come out to volunteer with us if you are feeling under the weather or if someone in your home is sick. Hygiene protocols are posted at our restoration site, please take note and follow the directions to minimize unnecessary risk to everyone. We require that all volunteers arrive to our events with facial covering and keep the covering on while we are gathered as a group.

We will each lunch out on the prairie, you are welcome/encouraged to bring a personal camp chair to sit on. Please respond to this email or email us at ssvolunteers@cnlm.org if you have any questions.

Last Week’s Highlights:

We are making progress on making this section of prairie broom free again! Our volunteers have been hard at work clearing broom that has had a combination of restoration actions in recent years. Some of this broom is a bit more difficult to pull, but recent rains have helped soften the soil making the older plants less resistant to pulling.

The local raptors have been watching our progress, or at least hunting near by. Recently we have have seen: Northern Harriers, American Kestrels, and Coopers and/or Sharp-shinned hawks and a variety of smaller birds, which are hard for this non-birder to ID on the wing.  Thank you everyone for their help in our restoration efforts, we could not do it without you!

As always, please dress for the weather and bring a boxed lunch, plenty of water, and work gloves. We look forward to seeing you out on the beautiful South Sound prairies. Thank you for all that you do! Directions to the work party locations can be found below…
