Job Summary: Under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee, The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the Ph.D. or other doctoral degree.

Additional Department Summary: Applications are invited for a 1-year (with possibility of renewal) Postdoctoral Research Associate as part of an initiative to establish a research center of Complex Spatial Systems (CCSS). CCSS is an emerging research center supported by the Alabama Transportation Institute with a focus on security, equity, and sustainability. Transportation systems intertwine these challenges in salient issues like social vulnerability, infrastructure resilience, and uneven impacts of climate change. Similarly, economic, social, and spatial inequities and security concerns can be both addressed and created by (in)accessible transportation systems. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work to advance CCSS’s vision of transportation-social-ecological systems as ‘systems of systems’, which link the dynamics of engineered, social, and environmental systems to produce complex spatial patterns of (in)equity, (in)security, and (un)sustainability.

Postdoctoral positions are available at The University of Alabama to individuals with research interests. Individuals holding these positions are to conduct research with various faculty members on a variety of projects.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in one or more disciplines associated with geography, socio-ecological systems, and/or interdisciplinary transportation research.

Candidates will need to have completed their Ph.D. or have it completed by the start of employment. Applicants should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae and include at least two references in the reference section of the application. Please upload additional documents to the “other documents” tab as needed.

Skills and Knowledge: A demonstrated high-level of academic writing ability is a critical requirement of this position.

Preferred Qualifications: One or more of the following: geographic information systems (GIS) analysis and programming, network analysis (e.g., supply chain mapping and evolution), evolutionary techniques (e.g., genetic algorithms and artificial intelligence), neural analogs (e.g., artificial neural nets), cellular models (e.g., cellular automata, random Markov fields), and agent-based models (termed multiagent systems or individual-based models).

Background Investigation Statement: Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources. A prior conviction reported as a result of the background investigation DOES NOT automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration for this position. A candidate with a prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags will receive an individualized review of the prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags before a hiring decision is made.
