Urban Sustainability Faculty Cluster Initiative: The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY seeks to accelerate transdisciplinary innovations in Urban Sustainability through the addition of three new faculty positions. These new faculty will work with an existing team who are committed to generating actionable science, offering experiential student learning opportunities, and advancing the socio-ecological paradigm as applied to urban sustainability.  With robust mentoring and research infrastructure support, new hires will be able to establish interdisciplinary connections, link with community groups and policymakers, and work within new research paradigms. We invite applications for the following tenure-track (10 month) positions: atmospheric science (Department of Chemistry), climate justice (Department of Environmental Studies), and climate-adaptive design (Department of Landscape Architecture).

Successful candidates for these three positions will be expected to participate actively and sustainably in this interdisciplinary initiative, “the Urban Sustainability Cluster.”  Participation in the Cluster will be an important criterion in performance evaluations.

The Department of Landscape Architecture (DLA) is seeking candidates for an academic year, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank, starting in the fall of 2022. As part of the Urban Sustainability Cluster, this faculty member will advance scholarship in Climate-Adaptive Design, connecting planning and design with the physical, natural, and social sciences to provide new insights into urban sustainability, resilience, and equity.

We are seeking a scholar who is excited about working as part of an interdisciplinary team to advance planning and design knowledge for urban sustainability at multiple scales. Climate adaptation is local and set within the context of regional, national, and international changes. Accordingly, in this cluster, researchers produce detailed field information (environmental monitoring, site analyses, community data and engagement), examine it in relation to regional and national patterns, and test design and policy interventions for mitigation, adaptation, and community wellbeing. Relevant planning and design expertise would include urban environmental systems, place-based and participatory planning and design; scenario planning; urban design and health; experiential learning; and community engagement. Air quality is an important dimension of the existing urban sustainability team, but successful candidates may also have experience in landscape performance, green infrastructure, urban forestry, green space benefits, racial justice, social equity, decision support/visualization, and neighborhood determinants of health.

The DLA currently has approximately 125 students enrolled in BLA, MLA, and MSLA programs, and in MS and PhD programs jointly managed by the DLA and the ESF Graduate Program in Environmental Science. The department’s focus on ecological design, cultural and natural resources conservation, and community engagement integrates knowledge across disciplines through an interdisciplinary/integrated systems approach. Beyond ESF, there is potential for collaborations with Syracuse University (SU), Upstate Medical University, or other institutions.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have the potential to develop, or show evidence of, a robust, extramurally funded research program, excellence in teaching, and service to the college and discipline. The new faculty member will play a prominent role in the delivery of our core curriculum and must demonstrate a strong interest in teaching undergraduate and graduate students. We employ team-taught studios with an emphasis on learning in a supportive environment. The ability to establish collaborative and collegial working relationships is required, as is an ability and interest in teaching design studios. We are particularly interested in candidates with a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications: A terminal degree in Landscape Architecture or a related discipline by the date of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications: A strong record of research/scholarly productivity and previous teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels. An established record of excellence in sponsored research and peer-reviewed publication. Grounding in one or more disciplines, interdisciplinary research experience, and/or international work experience.

Starting Salary:  commensurate with experience
