Full Position Description

 

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment (Sierra Institute), in cooperation with the Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) is hiring a Wilderness Fuels Module (WFM) Crew to perform fuels management in LAVO to promote future prescribed and/or managed fire activities in wilderness areas of the park.

This work will also directly contribute to increasing fire resiliency of critical habitat for Northern Goshawk and California Spotted Owl. The WFM Crew, under the direction of the Crew Leaders, Sierra Institute support staff, and LAVO specialists, will be responsible for working as a team in safely falling, bucking, and limbing live and dead trees and constructing fireline using predominantly non-mechanized equipment (e.g., crosscut saws, axes, etc.) in undeveloped wilderness areas and some non-wilderness areas.

Vegetation Management Technician

 

Location: Mineral, CA- with project work in Lassen Volcanic National Park

Season Dates: May/June to September/October (season dependent on weather conditions; start/end dates may be flexible for those with scheduling conflicts)

Compensation: $19/hr

Benefits: paid sick, holiday, and wildfire mitigation leave

Housing: Shared housing may be available for rent at the Park.

Training: systematic botany, plant identification, survey methodology, herbicide application, and Wilderness First Aid.

 

Full Position Description

 

Sierra Institute in collaboration with Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) is seeking to fill four Vegetation Management Technician roles. The selected candidates will engage in tasks such as monitoring native and invasive plants, performing invasive plant control with mechanical and chemical methods, and participating in plant restoration processes. Physical demands include extensive hiking and carrying equipment. This role not only allows for immersive interaction with LAVO’s diverse ecosystems but also offers a chance for collaboration on projects in neighboring regions and the potential to broaden experience with different resource management practices.
