What you will be doing: 
Fish and Wildlife Technician 2s collects biological and catch effort data from commercially harvested salmon and shellfish but may also sample groundfish depending on fishery dynamics. This position is stationed in Ketchikan, Alaska and data collection is conducted at local commercial seafood processors. The person(s) filling this position will be responsible for interviewing permit holders and recording confidential information, collecting biological data, identifying all five species of pacific salmon in their ocean bright condition, and recording all information in applications housed on a ruggedized computer tablet.

This port sampling position assists in the collection of biological and catch effort data from commercial salmon landings for: coded wire tags, fishery performance data, pink sex ratios, age-length data, genetic samples, and other biological data as directed.

The information collected by port samplers is used directly to manage the salmon fisheries within the State, and as part of Pacific Salmon Treaty obligations, is considered the foundation on which salmon management in Southeast Alaska is built.

The working environment you can expect:
Port sampling work is performed on-site within Ketchikan’s commercial seafood processing plants, where working conditions are often cold, wet, slippery, and exposed to weather. Numerous sampling programs are involved, and several different data collection applications must be filled out correctly. Attention to detail is a requirement.

  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, speaking to a fisher versus a coworker); listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Fishery Biology: General knowledge of salmon fishery dynamics in Southeast Alaska, with the ability to identify the 5 Pacific salmon species in ocean bright condition.
  • Computer Skills: Experience using computers/tablets and Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel)
  • Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to work a flexible schedule dependent on commercial fishing closures and openers.

  • Ability to repetitively lift, push or pull fish and gear up to 50 pounds, and at times, stand in one place for extended periods of time. 
    Ability to work on docks and in processers in cold, windy, wet and slippery conditions.
    Ability to work in loud conditions around moving machines, forklifts, and people.

 

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.
 
Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
 
Special Note:
“High school diploma equivalent” means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

What you will be doing:
The Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division, is seeking to hire several 3.5-4-month seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 2’s to serve as port samplers from May 31st to September 15th in Sitka. These positions may continue to be active through September 20th, depending on the dynamics of the fisheries. Port sampling technicians will be responsible for collecting both biological and fishery performance data from commercially harvested salmon and Dungeness crab landings. The selected candidates will develop a working knowledge of the port sampling program in the Sitka management area as well as an understanding of pertinent fisheries. Port sampling technicians will work at least 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week (with potential opportunities for overtime) in the seafood processing plants and docks in Sitka and may have the opportunity to collect samples onboard tender vessels on the fishing grounds. Port sampling technicians will be required to interact with commercial fishermen, processing plant workers, and other ADF&G staff in a professional and respectful manner. Data collection will include fishery performance data obtained through interviewing permit holders, as well as collecting biological samples (such as scales and tissue) and evaluating salmon for coded-wire tags (CWT) using a CWT wand. Practicing safe handling and learning to identify all five species of pacific salmon in their ocean bright condition are integral skills for this position. The technicians’ work will be directed by the Sitka Port Sampling Supervisor, Port Sampling Crew Leader, or the Regional Port Sampling Supervisor. Attention to detail and a willingness to learn are essential requirements for these exciting and dynamic positions.

This position will work as a member of a stream snorkeling crew for steelhead surveys between mid-April and mid-May, then transition to our Southeast Alaska Marine Sport Harvest Project between late May and the end of August. The Marine Sport Harvest Project collects information by interviewing sport anglers and sampling their catch as they return to harbors and boat launches. This position may be extended through September to assist with coho genetic baseline assessment work.

What you will be doing:

The Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division is seeking to hire two seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 2s to collect biological and catch effort data from the commercial harvest of salmon and shellfish but could include groundfish depending on fishery dynamics. This sampling will be conducted at commercial seafood processors in Petersburg, Alaska. The person(s) filling this position will be responsible for interviewing permit holders and recording information in applications housed on a ruggedized computer tablet, as well as collecting biological data and identifying all five species of pacific salmon in their ocean bright condition. The incumbent can expect to work irregular and sometimes long hours and this position requires the flexibility to work evenings and weekends (depending on the changing aspects of fisheries).

This port sampling position assists in the collection of biological data from commercial salmon landings for: coded wire tags, fishery performance data, pink sex ratios, age-length data, genetic samples and other biological data as directed. This information is used directly to manage the State of Alaska salmon fisheries, as part of Pacific Salmon Treaty obligations, and is considered the foundation on which the salmon management of Southeast Alaska is built.

Port sampling work is performed on the docks and inside of commercial seafood processing plants often in cold, slippery and wet conditions. Numerous sampling programs are involved, and several different sampling forms must be filled out correctly. Attention to detail is a requirement.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.
 
Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
 
Special Note:
“High school diploma equivalent” means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

What you will be doing:  
This position serves as a member of a two-person crew that collects age, sex, length, and genetic samples from Chinook and sockeye salmon harvested in the Upper Copper River subsistence and personal use salmon fisheries from approximately June 1 through August 31. This position requires working outdoors with extensive interaction with the public.  In addition to collecting biological samples, answering questions regarding fishing regulations and project objectives asked by fishermen is a large component of this job.

This position requires working every Thursday through Sunday, the flexibility to change work schedules with little notice, and often requires working early mornings, nights, and/or holidays shifts. Daily activities include interacting with personal use and subsistence fishermen to sample their harvested salmon; collecting salmon otoliths, scales, and other biological information by following intricate sampling procedures; and editing, organizing, and transporting collected samples and data.

What you will be doing: 
The Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division is seeking to hire a seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 to collect biological samples from commercially harvested salmon and shellfish in Juneau, Alaska.  This is a seasonal position which will be active from mid-June through mid-September depending on the dynamics of commercial fisheries openings/closings.  The selected candidate will develop a working knowledge of the port sampling program in the Juneau management area.  The technician in this port sampling position will work at least 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week (with potential opportunities for overtime) in the seafood processing plants and docks in Juneau collecting biological samples and data from commercially caught salmon.  Work hours may vary day to day and will be dependent on seafood processing plant schedules and fishery dynamics.  The technician will be required to interact with commercial fishermen, processing plant workers and other ADF&G staff.  The position will be responsible for interviewing permit holders and recording information, collecting biological samples such as scales and tissue, safe handling and identifying all five species of pacific salmon in their ocean bright condition.   Work will be directed by a crew leader and the Juneau Port Sampling Supervisor.  When port sampling is not required, this position will assist in the Region I Scale Lab by pressing scales for analysis using a heat press machine.

Port sampling is a great way to gain experience working with the public as a fishery professional. This independent, high-profile position will allow the incumbent to experience first-hand how fisheries regulations affect recreational anglers and fishing guides.

The working environment you can expect:
Valdez is a small, scenic, and friendly fishing town at the head of Prince William Sound. Fishing, hiking, and marine recreation opportunities are nearly limitless. The incumbent will be the only ADF&G staff member in town and will spend their shifts at the Valdez small boat harbor and a small office in the courthouse building. A State of Alaska vehicle will be provided for transportation to and from the harbor. Shifts will begin in the afternoon between 12-3pm and the incumbent will receive 2 consecutive days off each week, but these will rarely fall on weekends. Three days per week will be spent collecting AWL samples from sport caught halibut, rockfish, and lingcod and two days per week will be spent interviewing anglers. The sampling season will begin in mid-May and end in late August. There is some flexibility in start and end dates if necessary. Housing will not be provided.

Who we are looking for:
To be successful in this position the incumbent will need the following core competencies:
  • Positive attitude: Contacting and interviewing recreational anglers and charter boat captains as a Department representative requires a positive attitude.
  • Biological sampling experience: Sampling groundfish for age, weight, sex, and length requires some experience sampling animals or plants in the field.
  • Identification experience: Identifying groundfish using morphological characteristics requires some experience using identification guides or dichotomous keys.
  • Computer and organizational skills: Compiling, checking, and reporting sampling data requires Microsoft Excel skills and the ability to stay organized.

Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.
 
Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
 
Special Note:
“High school diploma equivalent” means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Under the supervision of a Fisheries Biologist 3 this position serves as crew leader assisting the Area Management Biologist with the Southeast Alaska Marine Harvest Studies (MHS) program. This position will lead up to 4 Fish and Wildlife Technician 2s. In additions the position will interview anglers and collect samples from a variety of fish species, assist with office work including entering/editing data, organizing and shipping samples and training technicians.

Our organization, mission and culture:
The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect, maintain and improve the State’s sport fisheries. This position collects important data for the fisheries research sampling goals of multiple projects including cutthroat trout sampling, rockfish maturity and the Marine Harvest Studies Program. This data is directly used in sport fisheries management decisions of salmon and groundfish. Interactions with the public provide an excellent opportunity to conduct field work, anglers’ interactions, fish identification and the research conducted by the Division of Sport Fish in Southeast Alaska.

The working environment you can expect:
Work will be conducted in the fishing communities of Craig and Klawock. Work entails assisting the local biologist with technician supervision and training, visiting local harbors, boat ramps and charter businesses to contact and interview anglers.  A variety of fish species will be encountered, identified, measured and examined for tags. All data will be entered on user friendly iPads.

Special Note:
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • The technician must be available for irregular work hours including weekends and holidays. This position is eligible for overtime;

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
 
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.
 
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
 
Special Note:
“High school diploma equivalent” means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
 
Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
