WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: 

This position will report to the Xerces Society Pollinator Conservation Biologist, Agricultural, Pesticide Program. As part of a multi-person Pesticide Program team and in coordination with our pollinator, endangered species, and outreach teams, the Pesticide Program Specialist, Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management will work to reduce pesticide risks to pollinators and their habitat in agricultural landscapes.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Working as a team with Xerces Society Pesticide Program Specialist, Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management will:

  • Provide technical support and clear information to Xerces staff, partner organizations, government agencies, and growers on best practices for reducing pesticide risks to pollinators and their habitat in agricultural landscapes, including a variety of specific crops and regions.
  • Develop resources for integrated pest and pollinator management (IPPM) for a variety of crops and regions.
  • Collaborate with Xerces staff and government agencies to develop and promote IPPM practices and incentives to scale grower adoption.
  • Assist in farm-specific habitat planning and pesticide risk assessment, supporting IPPM strategy development and implementation on farms to support successful crop production and minimize pesticide risk to pollinator habitat.
  • Develop outreach materials on pesticide reduction and habitat protection for a variety of audiences. Materials could include: community guides, fact sheets, summaries of scientific findings, technical guidance, and decision making tools. 
  • Build relationships with academic and Extension researchers to advance IPM research and publicize outcomes.
  • Design, coordinate, and present workshops and other training. 
  • Work with the Xerces team to develop program priorities and plans, including long and short-term goals, strategies, and tactics.
  • Maintain regular communication with supervisor, other staff on the pesticide and pollinator teams, and partner organizations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:  

REQUIRED

  • Experience with crop production, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management (IPPM), and/or other agroecological farming techniques
  • Strong understanding of pesticides, toxicology, and agricultural pesticide use.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and effectively communicate complex scientific information to a range of audiences to influence conservation practice.
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to insect/wildlife conservation.

PREFERRED

  • Experience in crop production in the Eastern or Midwestern United States.
  • Familiarity with state and federal conservation programs, particularly NRCS practices and incentives.
  • Knowledge of common insect pests, alternative pest management practices, and conservation biological control.
  • Knowledge of pollinators, butterflies, bumble bees, natural enemies, land management, and biodiversity conservation.
  • Experience with graphic design or other visual media skills.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: 

Working as a member of the Xerces Society’s Pollinator and Agricultural Biodiversity Program, the Pollinator Conservation Specialist, Urban Farms and Small-Scale Operations will work with historically underserved and beginning farmers in community gardens and other community organizations, focusing on conserving habitats for pollinators and beneficial insects. This position will be based in the Memphis, TN working primarily from a home office, as well as one day a week at the Memphis, TN USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service office. The person hired in this position will work closely with the Tennessee NRCS, the Xerces Society Pollinator Team, the USDA People’s Garden Initiative, local partners, and farmers. 

The person hired for this position will provide site-specific pollinator and beneficial insect conservation and habitat planning support with a focus on the area around Memphis, TN; conduct remote and in-person training on pollinator and beneficial insect conservation techniques regionally; support and build partnerships with local conservation and urban agriculture organizations; and assist urban and small farm producers in adopting pest management practices that are protective of farmers, neighboring communities, and pollinators. As the person in this position builds relationships with the NRCS, and local and regional partners, the geographic scope of this position may expand into neighboring counties, including into eastern Arkansas and potentially state-wide in Tennessee. Finally, this position will support adoption of innovative technologies that provide pollinator habitat while meeting multiple other natural resources goals such as improved soil health, water management, urban cooling, carbon sequestration, landscape beautification, new business opportunities (e.g. sale of wildflowers for pollinators), and more. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Working as a team with NRCS conservation staff, local partners and Xerces Society Pollinator and Ag Biodiversity Program staff, the Pollinator Conservation Specialist, Urban Farms and Small-Scale Operations will: 

  • Provide project-specific technical support on pollinator and beneficial insect conservation techniques and planning to urban or small farms and community gardens; to NRCS state and field office staff working in urban landscapes; and to agricultural and community organizations supporting farming or gardens in urban landscapes.
  • Coordinate and conduct workshops, field days, and other trainings on pollinator and beneficial insect conservation to underserved urban and small farm partners, community gardens and farms, NRCS and other conservation staff, local partners, and others. 
  • Assist in the development of site-specific pollinator or beneficial insect conservation plans for agricultural producers working on urban and small farms or community gardens in Memphis, TN and the surrounding regions.
  • Develop Xerces’ relationships and foster new partnerships with farmer organizations and networks that support underserved urban and small farms, community gardens, or other community organizations, connecting them to resources and technical support. 
  • Develop or assemble relevant pollinator and beneficial insect guidance documents for the NRCS and local partners, including plant lists, habitat installation guides, and reduced risk pest management guidance, focused on the unique needs and challenges of urban landscapes in Tennessee.
  • Learn the ins and outs of NRCS conservation programs  (especially the Environmental Quality Incentives Program and the Conservation Stewardship Program) and practices, conservation planning, and how best to support NRCS field office conservation planners and their clients through the habitat planning process.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: 

You’ll be joining a growing team of professionals working to conserve some of the world’s most important animals. The Agricultural Biodiversity Specialist – Habitat and Bee Better Certified Planner will support Xerces’ private-sector partners in designing and implementing cutting-edge conservation systems for bees and beneficial insects on farms across California and the U.S.

Supervised by Senior Pollinator Habitat Specialist, Food Systems and Living Farms Project Lead, this position will collaborate closely with farm managers, crop industry leaders and key staff at some of the largest food companies in the world to design and implement biodiversity and regenerative practices on farms that serve the manufactured food and fresh produce industries, with a special focus on the California  citrus industry.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Work with key staff at select food companies to identify and reach out to farms that will implement pollinator habitat  and climate smart agriculture practices.
  • Work with leaders in the California citrus industry to implement pollinator conservation, soil health and carbon sequestration practices on citrus farms
  • Develop large-scale habitat planting  plans, including protocols for site preparation, planting methods, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Support the promotion, recruitment, and on-boarding of farms into Xerces’ Bee Better Certified farm and food product certification program, including technical assistance throughout the application process.
  • Document pest management practices on farms and work with farmers to foster the adoption of Integrated Pest Management strategies.
  • Directly participate in the establishment of hedgerows, wildflower meadows and cover crop systems in heavily managed agricultural settings, including direct collaboration with farm staff and labor.
  • Perform monitoring of on-farm pollinator and beneficial insect habitats throughout the region. 
  • Support partners with science-based advice and consulting on native bee conservation, on-farm ecosystem services and nature-based pest and climate solutions. 
  • Communicate our conservation model and the impact of our work to diverse stakeholders including farmers, food companies, and government agencies at conferences, workshops, and business meetings.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: 

This position is a partnership with the USDA’s National Resource Conservation Service’s (NRCS) West National Technology Support Center (WNTSC), located in Portland, OR, generally serving states in the Pacific, Mountain, and Hawaii Time Zones. Taking a technical leadership role in Xerces Society work with senior NRCS regional and state-level technical specialists, Xerces Society Program staff, and regional research partners, the Conservation Entomologist will help develop and implement regional conservation strategies for monarch butterflies, pollinators, invertebrate food for wildlife, and other beneficial insects. In support of these efforts, this position will create and update tools and conservation program technical guidance to help NRCS field staff to evaluate and plan habitat. These tools may include habitat evaluation guides, habitat specifications, restoration guidance, plant lists, and guidance on managing western rangelands for native plant diversity to benefit monarchs, pollinators and other beneficial invertebrates. The person in this position will organize and provide trainings and follow up support to NRCS staff and working lands partners on how to use this guidance consistently. 

The Conservation Entomologist will work with NRCS regional and state-level specialists and partners to lead Xerces’ work throughout the western region on NRCS wildlife conservation strategies that sustain healthy ecosystems and ensure that abundant resources are available for key invertebrate wildlife, including monarch butterflies, pollinators and food for grassland birds. This position is responsible for understanding the shared goals of the NRCS and Xerces, and for thoughtfully and independently supporting and growing this partnership. Exceptional listening and communication skills are required. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

  • Work with Xerces Society and NRCS state and regional specialists throughout the western region to develop and refine technical documents that support the assessment, establishment, enhancement or management of pollinator, monarch butterfly, beneficial invertebrate, and wildlife habitat. Technical documents may include habitat evaluation guides, conservation practice specifications, plant lists, seed mixes, habitat management guidelines, pesticide risk reduction strategies, and habitat restoration guidelines. 
  • Assist the NRCS in the implementation of monarch butterfly conservation efforts throughout the western region, with a focus on the western monarch population that overwinters in coastal California. These efforts will include: 
  • Developing habitat evaluation and planning guidance, and training NRCS staff,
  • Developing habitat management and restoration guidance in accordance with NRCS standards and specification, with a focus on eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, Idaho Snake River plain, California Central Valley and foothills, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. 
  • Collaborating with Xerces Society and NRCS Specialists, monarch experts and researchers, and others to develop models and maps for where to target conservation efforts for the western Monarch population.
  • Collaborate with NRCS technical experts and conservation and research partners to support and facilitate regional efforts targeting the conservation of ecosystem function. These efforts may include finetuning larger scale management efforts of sage brush ecosystems to ensure specific outcomes, such as the diversity of key native plant communities that underpin monarch butterfly conservation or invertebrate food sources for wildlife communities. 
  • Establish new and strengthen existing partnerships and collaborations with NRCS regional and state-level staff, other Xerces staff, university or agency researchers, conservation organizations, state and federal agencies, and other partners.
  • Present or coordinate workshops on the conservation of pollinators, beneficial insects for pest control, invertebrate food for wildlife, monarch butterflies, or other conservation entomology topics to a variety of NRCS and working-lands audiences.
  • Develop and lead innovative regional projects that advance pollinator and beneficial insect conservation through collaboration with the NRCS.

  •  Ability to identify native plants that are beneficial to monarch butterflies and pollinators in the western states. 
  • Knowledge and experience planning or implementing pollinator habitat restoration in cropland, rangeland, natural areas, or other western landscapes
  • Knowledge and experience in grassland and wildlife management unique to the western states. This includes experience with native plant restoration, prescribed grazing, prescribed fire, brush management, invasive species control, range planting, or riparian management to benefit both biodiversity and range health. 
  • Exceptional presentation, public speaking, and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences that include land managers, ranchers, farmers, conservation agency staff, and others.

JOB TITLE:  Conservation GIS Specialist

LOCATION:  Remote position. Candidates must have a home office location suitable for work purposes, with good internet access, and must be located in a city or state location approved by Xerces as their permanent work location.

COMPENSATION: $65,540/ year

STATUS & SCHEDULE: Full-Time, salaried, exempt position, scheduled to work ~ 40 hours/week.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING: 

Under the supervision of the Conservation and GIS Data Analyst, the GIS Technician supports internal staff with GIS and data management work across conservation programs. This includes responding to staff technical requests, creating internal and public-facing data and GIS products, and assisting with the administration of GIS and internal reporting systems. The GIS Technician is also responsible for designing and leading staff instruction on GIS and data management skills, tools, and best practices in the form of training, workshops, and written documentation.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Provides technical support for staff including advice, instruction, and troubleshooting related to data management and GIS
  • Designs and creates GIS products requested by staff such as datasets, maps, web apps, and analyses
  • Works with staff to identify product intended audience, functional requirements, lifetime, completion deadline, and estimated hours to complete
  • Incorporates feedback from supervisor and staff on draft products, creates product metadata, and documents product maintenance steps if relevant
  • Proactively suggests ways that GIS and data management could be used to improve staff work
  • Train staff on GIS and data management skills, tools, and best practices
  • Design and lead staff instruction in the form of periodic trainings, workshops and written guides
  • Create a GIS and Data management help portal to facilitate staff self-service access to trainings and guides
  • Create and moderate an internal staff discussion group for GIS questions and solutions
  • Instruct staff on use of existing systems and tools, including internal metric reporting systems
  • Assist in GIS and internal reporting system administration
  • Review external facing content created by staff for adherence to data standards, including data sensitivity
  • Build out documentation for long-lifespan products so that these can be more easily maintained
  • Other responsibilities assisting in administrative duties when necessary
Requirements

  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:  

REQUIRED

  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online to create and manipulate vector and raster data, digitize print maps, and manage large relational datasets
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Apps such as Survey123, Field Maps, Dashboards and StoryMaps
  • Demonstrated ability to create high quality maps, apps, and other data visualization products
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Google Sheets, Excel and other Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications
  • Experience teaching technical topics to groups with varying skill levels 
  • Strong communication, writing and organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage time and diverse activities under tight deadlines while delivering high quality results
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in identifying problems and designing novel solutions
  • Curiosity and passion for conservation, ecology, or wildlife biology

PREFERRED

  • Conservation biology background and/or understanding of conservation biology issues
  • Understanding of quantitative and computational methods to analyze data, including the use of spatial statistics, data modeling, and analysis to identify patterns
  • Experience using data gathering tools in field settings: tablets, GPS, cellular mobile devices
  • Experience training new GIS users and developing clear, user-friendly guides and procedures
  • Experience with data automation such as using Model Builder and python scripting
  • Preference for experience with ArcGIS Hub Premium
  • Experience troubleshooting GIS software

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS / Geospatial Science, Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology or related field, OR an associate’s degree and successful completion of an accredited GIS training and certificate program
  • Two years of directly related professional work experience demonstrating GIS knowledge and skills, such as working with database and GIS in data management, visualization, and analysis
