Job Description What you will do: The purpose of these positions is to conduct studies to investigate the production of steelhead in the Umatilla River and tributaries. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Walk streams to estimate redd and adult fish numbers.
  • Sample adult carcasses (measure length, collect scales, determine sex, and assess egg retention).
  • Assists with PIT tagging fish at field sites.
  • Transports equipment and supplies to study site.
  • Assembles traps, sampling stations, and holding tanks using standard hand and power tools. Operates hoists, pulleys, winches, and an overhead crane to deploy and position traps or equipment.
  • Operates and maintains PIT tag detection system.
  • Uses computers and tablets to electronically record data.

 

These positions require a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day including most weekends and some night work. These positions may be physically demanding.

Job Description: What you will do

The purpose of this position is to gather information on the life history and natural production of anadromous salmonids within The Dalles Watershed. Primary duties involve capturing and tagging juvenile salmon and steelhead, installing, operating, and maintaining juvenile salmonid traps. Project findings will be used to evaluate the status of anadromous salmonid populations in Mill Creek and Fifteenmile Creek within The Dalles Watershed Area.

 

Working Conditions:

This position requires frequent travel to study sites; work on weekends, and in inclement weather; the ability to transport equipment and supplies over rough terrain and for long distances, in remote areas; and the ability to conduct stream surveys in deep water.  A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving are required.

This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek.  Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.  Dealings with the public, local residents and other agency personnel are frequent and a well-developed sense of diplomacy is required.

Job Description: What you will do: Port samplers conduct field interviews with recreational and/or commercial fishers and conduct recreational fishery effort counts. Employees are expected to handle and collect data and samples from a variety of fish species; learn proper identification of common marine fishes; and accurately record and summarize field data from interviews and biological sampling. Lifting of fish and equipment up to 50 pounds is required. Employees are expected to effectively communicate with anglers, commercial fishers, and the general public on a daily basis. All jobs entail working outdoors in exposed locations, at times during inclement weather conditions, and require walking up and down boat ramps and docks, on sandy beaches, and between fish buying stations.

 

Most positions will require the use of digital video recording equipment to monitor fishing vessel activity. Some driving between workstations is required. Employees will need to provide transportation and proof of auto insurance. Vehicle mileage while working will be reimbursed. Job Description: What you will do:

  • Performs data collection, sampling, and marking of juvenile fish for project and operation of fish trap to insure completion of all tasks under the Smolt Monitoring Program and adherence to biological concerns specific to ESA listed fish.

  • Performs juvenile salmonid identification and careful procedure for anesthetization, marking and release of all collected fish. Summarizes, records, and reports daily collection, sampling, PIT tag marking, and fish condition and mortality data to the Fish Passage Center and PTAGIS.

  • Electronically transmits daily sampling data on a daily basis to FPC and PTAGIS. Sampling data will be used to estimate species outmigration and migration timing for management purposes.

  • Monitor other environmental variables at the trap site (water temperature, turbidity).

  • Accurately record data.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Employees will operate and maintain a large fish trap and small boats. Requires working long hours, frequently on weekends, in adverse weather conditions and/or on slippery stream banks. Work requires driving long distances on gravel roads, possibly in adverse weather conditions. Lifting of fish and equipment up to 50 pounds is required. The trap will be operated seven nights/days per week. Employees will be working and living at a remote field station in adverse weather. Onsite housing will be provided, however, facilities are rudimentary (camping). During periods of intense monitoring activity, employees must work long hours at irregular times.  This position is physically demanding.

  • These positions require a valid driver license and acceptable driving record.

  • These positions require a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board.

  • These positions require a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek.
