Naselle Hatchery: 5 Months – August 15, 2021 – January 31, 2022

Forks Creek Hatchery: 5 Months – August 15, 2021 – January 31, 2022

North Toutle Hatchery: 3 Months – August 15, 2021 – November 19, 2021
 

Duties

ur Fish Hatchery Technicians, 

  • Monitor eggs and fish production and disinfect and enumerate eggs. 
  • Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution. 
  • Wash and clean ponds, intakes, troughs, and egg trays. 
  • Assist with spawning and placing in incubation units to meet program goals. 
  • Pick and enumerate eyed eggs and load hatching trays with eyed eggs and fry.
  • Assist hatchery staff in recording fish collected, eggs taken, feed fed, and pond mortalities.
  • Occasionally drive standard or flatbed pickup to deliver hatchery supplies. 

Operation and Maintenance of Facility 

Tasks Include:

  • Actively identifying safety hazards and acting in resolution.
  • Operating high pressure pumps and manual cleaning of rearing containers with brooms and brushes.
  • Washing and cleaning ponds, water intakes, tanks, troughs, and egg trays. 
  • Administering chemical and medicated feed treatments and assisting in measuring and maintaining proper flows to the hatchery.
  • Service and maintain hatchery related equipment and structures.
  • Maintain intakes, traps, and weirs for proper operation.
  • Performing grounds care and maintenance, repairs equipment and facilities.

Record Keeping and Reporting

Tasks Include:

  • Assisting hatchery staff in recording fish collected, eggs taken, feed fed and pond mortalities.
  • Filling in hatchery forms with daily activities (ex. daily loss, temperature, daily adult, and egg totals).
  • Reporting fish behavior and environmental changes to supervisors.
  • Recording data for egg, fry and juvenile mortality, weight samples, feed usage, and chemical use.

Communication

          Tasks Include:

  • Responding to questions from public.
  • Interacting with the public in a polite and professional manner.
  • Communicating closely with supervisors and coworkers regarding hatchery operation and infrastructure. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and includes strenuous physical activities.
  • Schedule: 
    1. Naselle Hatchery positions: Hours could vary greatly, some short days and some long days depending on weather and availability of fish.
    2. Forks Creek Hatchery position: Hours could vary greatly, some short days and some long days depending on weather and availability of fish.
    3. North Toutle Hatchery position: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Naselle Hatchery positions: May require travel to other hatcheries to assist in hatchery operations.
    2. Forks Creek Hatchery position: May require travel to other hatcheries to assist in hatchery operations.
    3. North Toutle Hatchery position: N/A
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Perform mechanical tasks using power and hand tools.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Some interaction with public and volunteers.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED. 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A valid driver’s license is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Six (6) months of experiences working at a fish hatchery. 

Knowledge of:

  1. Basic fish culture techniques.
  2. Rearing procedures.

Ability to:

  1. Identify salmonids.
