Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group (Mid Sound), a nonprofit, has an exciting opportunity for an individual interested in working with youth and habitat restoration. Mid Sound engages people in on-the-ground efforts to help salmon and our communities thrive.
For the 2nd summer, Mid Sound is hosting a youth crew with Partners in Employment to complete habitat restoration projects at parks in the City of Auburn.
This will be a seasonal position to lead a youth crew cohort from June-August at 40 hours per week, and a second cohort September-November at 27 hours per week. Crew leads who can only lead one cohort will be considered.
The 12-person crew will be from South King County refugee and immigrant communities aged 16-24 years old. The focus for the project will be to help youth gain new skills and learn about different career paths while restoring priority riparian habitat along the lower Green River in Auburn, WA. Main activities will include invasive species removal to prep for fall plantings, maintenance of older restoration sites, and educational opportunities.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with habitat restoration, working with/leading young adults, environmental education, and/or landscaping.
- Knowledge of PNW native and invasive plants/ecology, general environmental science, landscaping/habitat restoration are all pluses.
- Comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds. Experience working with immigrant communities, underserved communities, or communities of color is a plus.
- Willingness to share knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for the outdoors.
- Enjoys problem solving, teamwork, and maintaining a positive attitude even in tough conditions.
- Responsible, excited for leadership role, leads by example.
- Ability to work outdoors for long days in variety of weather conditions and complete repetitive physical tasks like digging, lopping, and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to communicate and work as part of a team, sensitive to cultural differences.
- CPR/First Aid Certification is a plus.
- Access to personal vehicle and ability to travel for work. Mileage will be reimbursed at the current WA State rate from the primary work station in Auburn.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Help lead and work alongside youth to complete habitat restoration projects.
- Invasive species removal, watering, mulching, and planting.
- Encourage, motivate, teach, and mentor youth crew members.
- Maintain a safe and welcoming work environment with an emphasis on learning.
- Assist and lead trainings in the field, such as tool safety, plant identification, salmon ecology or whatever you might be passionate about.
- Work with other Mid Sound staff and interns assisting with the crew.
- Help coordinate logistics for the site and crew.
- Track and record work progress, communicate concerns, and manage work site.
- Assist with educational and training opportunities as needed.
- Interact regularly with the public, project partners, and co-workers.
