The Division of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) is recruiting an Area Management Biologist (Wildlife Biologist 3) for the Douglas Area Wildlife office. This position is located in Douglas and has oversight responsibility for wildlife management activities in northern Southeast Alaska, including supervision of an Assistant Area Management Biologist (Wildlife Biologist 2). Under the direct supervision of the Management Coordinator, this position has wildlife management responsibilities in Game Management Units 1C, 1D, and 5 to support Wildlife Conservation staff and projects in the Southeast Region of Alaska (DWC, Region I). The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to monitoring and evaluating wildlife populations, including moose, mountain goat, brown bear, black bear, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves, and furbearers.

This position will be based out of the Douglas Fish and Game office, but about a third of the time will be out conducting field work either around Juneau/Douglas or while temporarily base out of one of the small towns within the management area. Some time will be spent away from the duty station for short 2-10 day trips. Much of the field work is conducted from an aircraft. Some field work is at night responding to human-bear conflict calls.

We are looking for an energetic and committed, professional who has:

1) Experience designing, planning, and implementing sound and practical programs of wildlife management for mammal populations.
2) Experience capturing, immobilizing, and performing physical examinations of various large mammal species.
3) Experience collecting data via aerial and ground surveys, summarizing data, and preparing technical reports.
4) Experience addressing human-wildlife conflicts.
5) Experience with answering public inquires on complex issues or regulations through oral and written communication (i.e., explaining trapping/hunting regulations, processes for obtaining a hunting permit, public access, etc.).
6) Experience preparing and presenting information to Fish and Game advisory committees, regulatory boards, and at other public meetings.
7) Experience with supervising one or more technical or professional employees.
