Responsibilities

As a Wildlife Biologist your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducts and implements the refuge’s biological programs including but not limited to: research, planning and implementation of projects related to native, resident and migratory wildlife, endangered species and associated habitats.
  • Develops and conducts wildlife, fish, invertebrate and plant species investigations and surveys, observing and recording a wide variety of data on populations, trends, habitat and condition for baseline data or to ensure current management activities accomplish refuge goals.
    Prepares written reports and plans, and provides written and oral information to staff, other agencies and the general public. Utilizes computer skills to enter, analyze and prepare reports on data collected from refuge biological monitoring programs.
  • Creates protocols for research and management within the refuge’s biological program.
    Implements restoration work according to written plans and guidance with the support of other staff, volunteers, interns and partners.
  • Conducts and implements field evaluations to determine and document habitat and wildlife status, trends and utilization levels resulting from management activities and weather variations.
  • Evaluates data and provides sound technical advice to ensure habitat resources are maintained commensurate with refuge objectives.
    Maintains professional working relationships with refuge staff, Service staff, and other federal and state agencies, partner organizations, members of the academic community, volunteers, and the visiting public.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as boats, four-wheel drive vehicles, all terrain vehicles, heavy equipment and other equipment.
  • Invasives species management- Conduct invasive plant species grid mapping across the refuge.
  • Enter invasive species data into a Service iPad, including GPS locations and photographs
  • Ensure the quality of the data being collected.
  • Upload data into the Service invasive species database.
  • Perform mechanical treatment and control of invasive plants across the refuge complex by hand pulling, using tools such as weed wrenches or brush saws, and other methods as assigned.
  • Perform chemical treatment and control of invasive plants across the refuge complex through the use of herbicides, which may be foliar, basal, or stump treatments under the direction of the refuge’s Certified Pesticide Applicator.
  • Map and report all invasive species treatment and control efforts.
