Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Summary

A Wildlife Biologist position is available with Colorado State University (CSU) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML), and will conduct work at Travis Air Force Base, California. This position creates maps, and supports projects listed in the Integrated Natural Resources Management plan such as conducting field surveys, assisting with the preparation of permits and similar documents, contributing to the development of plans, and preparing documents for the public, other employees, and military personnel.

Travis Air Force Base (TAFB) is a United States Air Force Base under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command and is located three miles (5 km) east of the central business district of Fairfield, in Solano County, California, 50 miles northeast of San Francisco and 40 miles southwest of Sacramento. TAFB is situated on approximately 5,137 acres and is midway between the coastal zone and the interior valley of California.

Required Job Qualifications   

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for continued employment.
  • A BS/BA in wildlife biology, natural resources management, or closely applied related field with at least three years post degree relevant work experience OR a MA/MS degree in a related field.
  • Experience with the flora and fauna of northern California or similar areas.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and requirements regarding environmental protections (e.g., Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, NEPA, etc.).
  • Experience conducting site surveys.
  • Knowledge of and experience with military Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans.
  • Experience with GIS.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience doing field data collection.
  • Experience conducting California bird species surveys (sight and hearing).
  • Experience conducting wildlife surveys.
  • Ability to write consultation documents that evaluate impacts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with/coordination with federal agencies.
  • Experience with computers, including conventional business software, global positioning systems and ArcGIS software (10.6+).
  • Experience working on military installations.
  • Experience writing permits and Endangered Species Act documents (e.g., evaluations to determine if an activity will affect/not affect a federally-listed species).
