CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on the Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Summary

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands is hiring up to two Wildlife Biologist support positions to assist and support the senior wildlife biologists at Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL), California. These are field and office positions that will support the implementation of a variety of projects identified in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) for installation compliance. Work location is at FHL in southern Monterey County, California.
 
Fort Hunter Liggett is an approximately 162,000-acre United States Army Reserve installation located in Monterey County, California. The installation is located in the Santa Lucia Mountain Range of the outer South Coast Mountain ranges. Installation lands include annual and perennial grasslands, oak savannas and woodlands, mixed evergreen forest, coastal scrub and chaparral on a variety of contours.
 
Required Job Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include (must address point in your cover letter or in your resume): 
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.  
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and meet CSU standards for driving throughout the course of employment. 
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in wildlife biology, ecology, or a natural resource-related applied field.
  • One or more years of professional experience conducting natural resources, biological, survey, and/or monitoring studies.
  • Working knowledge of California or similar ecosystems (flora, fauna)
  • Proven excellent written and oral communications skills 
  • Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and ArcGIS 10.6+
  • Experience collecting natural resources data on a Global Positioning System (GPS)
  • Able/Willing to work weekends and holidays during the FHL Hunting Season
  • Available to work nights (for surveys) and under adverse environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, roughed terrain, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of the Endangered Species Act and other environmental laws and regulations
  • Experienced as a wildlife biologist in two or more of the following areas: 
    • Herpetology
    • Botany
    • Invertebrates (fairy shrimp)
    • Bats
    • Birds 

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Able to cite technical reports and presentations where significant contributions were made
  • Experience conducting, managing, and analyzing data (flora, fauna)
  • Experience with or the ability to assist with the collection of harvest and biological data collection during the open deer and elk hunting seasons as needed
  • Experience with or ability to provide support with game/nongame projects, such as wood duck nest boxes (reproductive performance), invasive mussel surveys, and springs and guzzlers maintenance
  • Experience with or ability to assist in fish stocking
  • Extensive knowledge with amphibians, crustaceans, avian species
  • Possess or willing to obtain a California State pesticide applicator’s license
Essential Duties

  • Field Support
    • Assist with various threatened and endangered species and/or natural resource surveys. This could include ensuring data are collected properly, ensuring that data are stored, analyzed and reported to meet SOW requirements. 
    • Delineate areas via GPS. This includes determining the factors that need to be addressed prior to data collection to be compatible with established norms, that data are being collected properly, and downloading data daily for further quality assurance.
    • Assist with night and field surveys.
    • Man hunting stations including weekends and holidays. This would include documenting kills, checking/logging collection permits, and similar activities.
    • Use knowledge of California plant and animal identification for accurate data recording during surveys. 
  • Office Support
    • Data management and analysis. Must be familiar with typical programs commonly used, ensure that the data have been vetted for accuracy and completeness and analysis.
    • Use MSWord, Excel, and ArcGIS for data analysis, submission, and reports.
    • Write technical reports following the standard models for scientific papers.
    • Create presentations for projects identified and/or support items in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan.
    • Monitor equipment inventory regularly to ensure all equipment can be accounted for and in good working condition. 
    • Log photographs (location, date, and content).
    • Make maps in ArcGIS 10.6+ as well as validate data quality.
