CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. Position Summary     

A Wildlife Biologist position is available with Colorado State University (CSU), Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML), and will conduct work at Parks Reserve Forces Training Area (PRFTA), California. PRFTA is a sub-installation of Fort Hunter Liggett and is located east of San Francisco in Dublin, California.

The Wildlife Biologist will utilize their advanced knowledge and expertise in the area of wildlife biology and avian studies to execute burrowing owl inventories, and will survey other avian species that are federally-listed species and/or fall under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This position will also work with the fauna of California, and will be an expert in addressing procedural and management on multiple, divergent topics (e.g., burrowing owl, California tiger salamander, California red-legged frog, and San Joaquin kit fox). This position will be responsible for collecting, managing, analyzing and reporting data, and will be responsible for making management suggestions based on collected data and analysis. The individual in this position will use the latest version of ArcGIS, and will use technical editing skills and strong writing skills capable of producing reports to federal agencies. This position will work independently with limited oversight. This position requires periodic travel to Fort Hunter Liggett, California, to provide technical expertise for various field surveys.

Required Job Qualifications   

Minimum qualifications include:

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for continued employment.
  • A BS/BA in wildlife biology, natural resources management, or closely related applied field of terrestrial ecology.
  • At least five years post degree work experience in the areas mentioned above OR a master’s degree in wildlife biology, natural resource management, or closely related applied field of terrestrial ecology and three years of related professional work experience
  • Experience with GPS and field data recorders.
  • Experience with the flora and fauna of northern California or similar areas.
  • Experienced conducting bird surveys by sight and sound.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and requirements regarding environmental protections (e.g., Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, NEPA, etc.).
  • Experienced conducting construction site surveys.
  • Experience with ArcGIS 10.6 or higher.
  • Experience managing commitments and meeting deliverables.

Preferred Job Qualifications  

Preferred qualifications include:

  • MS/MA in wildlife biology or related discipline.
  • Experience working with burrowing owls.
  • Experience with banding and willing to obtain a permit if necessary.
  • Experience doing field data collection.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with computers, including conventional business software, global positioning systems and ArcGIS software.
  • Experience working on military installations.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans.
  • Skilled in collecting and analyzing data effectively and independently.
  • Experienced working with amphibians (e.g., salamanders, frogs).
