Basic Functions: In the Colville Confederated Tribes’ Fish and Wildlife Department, this individual serves as an entry-level biologist working under the general supervision of the District Wildlife Biologist on the North and South Half of the Colville Indian Reservation and within aboriginal lands outside of the Reservation. The primary duties of this position will be to investigate, survey, review, and provide management recommendations/comments to Forest Practice Applications, water-type modifications, Tribal timber sales, land management projects, post-fire habitat management, and to provide support for species and habitat management plan development, population surveys and monitoring, and wild animal damage response. This employee will work both independently and collaboratively when conducting professional biological studies and/or research and provides analysis and assessment of fish, wildlife, lands or habitat management data. Position requires balanced office and fieldwork in all weather and terrain conditions.

Education and Training:

Biologist I
A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Sciences (Wildlife Directed Studies), or closely related field. ORA Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Sciences (Wildlife Directed Studies), or closely related field. Must attain or maintain a current wildland fire response certification at a level that allows full participation in the BAER Team (may require “arduous” level) within a reasonable timeframe (before the first fire season after hire depending on the scheduling of trainings.)
Biologist II
A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Sciences (Wildlife Directed Studies), or closely related field, AND 36 months experience at the Biologist I and II or equivalent levels related to wildlife management or research, habitat management or research OR A Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, Natural Resource Sciences (Wildlife Directed Studies), or closely related field, AND 12 months experience at the Biologist I and II or equivalent levels related to wildlife management or research, habitat management or research. Must have experience writing at least one of the following (or a significant portion thereof): a wildlife population or habitat management plan; Environmental Assessment (EA) or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS); BAER required reporting; or closely related. Must possess certification/training in Washington State Forest Practice issues (Water Typing, Unstable Slopes, Wetland Delineations, Forest Health, etc.). Must have completed training in ArcGIS software and experience utilizing the program to analyze statistical data. Must possess or gain certification/training in the NEPA process and NEPA document preparation and writing.
- Requires a valid Driver’s License and be eligible for coverage under the Tribes’ vehicle Insurance.
- Requires the ability to maintain or obtain a certification in the use of Chemical Immobilization and Wildlife Handling within 6 months of employment or at first opportunity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires knowledge of life history and habitat requirements of local fish and wildlife species.
- Requires knowledge of fish and wildlife habitat management techniques.
- Requires knowledge of animal damage control principles and procedures including trapping, relocation and lethal removal of nuisance or dangerous animals.
- Requires knowledge of methods and practices of general land management.
- Requires knowledge of state and federal environmental rules and regulations.
- Requires knowledge of biological research and wildlife management methods.
- Requires knowledge of database design and use in natural resource management.
- Requires knowledge of standard laboratory and field methods and statistical data processing.
- Requires knowledge of tribal Forest Practice Codes.
- Requires knowledge of Washington State Forest Practice regulations.
- Requires knowledge of Forest and Fish Report and the Timber Fish and Wildlife Agreement.
- Requires knowledge of how to design and implement wildlife population surveys.
- Requires knowledge of GPS receivers and ARCGIS software for the management of natural resources.
- Requires knowledge of how to develop and read maps and aerial photos, and conduct self-orientation in the field utilizing various instruments and reference resources.
- Requires the ability to synthesize and/or analyze environmental information and research findings to formulate wildlife management recommendations.
- Requires the ability to organize and schedule wildlife research or management studies.
- Requires the ability to interpret environmental regulation and related laws.
- Requires the ability to safely trap and handle a variety of problem wildlife to include skunks, bears, and cougars.
- Requires the ability to safely handle, shoot and maintain firearms and chemical immobilization guns.
- Requires the ability to coordinate, lead, or supervise technical or nontechnical volunteer or staff.
- Requires the ability write and speak clearly and effectively.
- Requires the ability to prepare written reports and make oral presentations.
- Requires the ability to interpret hunting regulations.
- Requires the ability to utilize computers for routine data analysis and word processing tasks.
- Requires the ability to utilize GIS and GPS software effectively to produce maps and manipulate data.
- Requires the ability to perform a variety of outdoor work in rugged, difficult terrain and in inclement weather.
- Requires the ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles, ATV’s and snowmobiles on rough, primitive roads and trails.
- Requires the ability to operate chainsaws and other power and hand tools.
- Requires the ability to make positive public contacts in the field; and assist in educational courses.
- Requires the ability to be in good physical condition and able to work in inclement weather conditions, on tractors/atvs/snowmobiles, and over variable, slippery, and rugged terrain with supplies and equipment.
- Requires the ability to complete repetitive tasks such as: testing equipment or GPS collars, spraying invasive species, entering large amounts of data, or working on computers for extended periods of time.
- Requires the ability to sit or stand for considerable periods of time (hours).
