Salary– $2,827.00 – $3,650.00 Monthly

Our Wildlife Area Technician,

Assists in the coordination and implementation of wildlife habitat management and public access projects on the Olympic-Willapa Hills Wildlife Area.  

  • Projects often include activities such as mowing, disking, seeding, limbing trees, installing gates, spreading gravel, and herbicide application.
  • This duty requires the use of heavy equipment such as tractors, mowers, disks, seeders, herbicide sprayers, the use of hand tools and power tools such as brush cutters and chainsaws.

Maintains tools, equipment, vehicles, facilities, and infrastructure to ensure safe and effective operation and conditions for both staff and the public.  

  • Maintains a variety of vehicles and equipment common to land management such as trucks, tractors, trailers, mowers, spray systems, ATVs, and chainsaws
  • Installs, operates, and maintains infrastructure including water control structures, tide gates, roads, fences, and parking areas.
  • Manages facilities including chemical and equipment storage areas, managing bulk fuel supplies, troubleshooting heating and plumbing issues, and keeping all elements of the shop in working order.

Performs administrative tasks.  

  • Performs Wildlife Program and Wildlife Area administrative tasks including responding to the public, weekly reporting, purchasing materials, training, and meeting with other agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Assists regional staff in implementation of habitat management and public access projects on other Wildlife Areas.  

  • Mowing, weed eating, brushing, burning, herbicide application, parking area maintenance, and other tasks as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Position functions primarily in the field, but also in shop and office settings.
    2. Hazards include exposure to inclement weather and difficult terrain, working with power equipment, tripping/falling, and other things consistent with working with tractors, implements, and other equipment in an outdoor setting.
    3. Must be able to walk, lift, bend, stoop, sometimes on uneven terrain, while at times carrying and lifting up to 40 pounds of equipment and supplies. 
  • Schedule:
    1. Standard hours are Monday – Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    2. These positions may have a flexible schedule and may work outside the standard business hours.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Overnight travel is seldom required.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Regular duties require the use of trucks, trailers, tractors, various implements, sprayers, power, and hand tools.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Periodic interaction with the public in both field and office settings.

 

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three years of experience as a Natural Resource Worker 1 or equivalent

OR

  • An Associate’s degree in a natural resources field AND 1 year of experience at the Natural Resource Worker 1 level or equivalent.

Licenses:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain a Pesticide Applicator’s License within 1 year of employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

License:

  • Commercial Driver’s License

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Wildlife habitat enhancement and management methods.
  • Moist soil management principles.
  • Heavy equipment operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Small engine tools such as pumps, chainsaws, and brush cutters.
  • Trade skills such as carpentry, mechanics, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Computer software (Microsoft Office).
