POSITION
One Natural Resources Technician (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position will provide support to the natural resources program at Eielson Air Force Base (AFB), Alaska. Successful candidates will gain entry-level experience on a range of natural resource and wildlife management projects under mentorship with natural resource managers at Eielson AFB, while learning about the regulatory framework used to guide management on Department of Defense lands. This position is available through an open pool that includes a variety of other positions that will continue to be posted throughout 2023. Military affiliation is not required to apply for this position.

Position Duty Station: Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska
Eielson Air Force Base is a 20,000-acre United States military installation located about 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. The base is used primarily for aircraft testing and support, and secondarily to provide a variety of recreational programs for military personnel and the public. The Eielson natural resources program is managed by the 354th Civil Engineering Squadron (CES), which is tasked with managing the installation’s natural resources, as required by DoD policies and the Eielson Integrated Natural and Cultural Resources Management Plans. More specifically, the 354th CES maintains and protects over 15,700-acres of forests, 330-acres of lakes, and 28 miles of fresh-water streams. It also manages the AFB’s recreational programs, which offer many unique hunting, fishing, skiing, and hiking opportunities throughout the year.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Natural Resources Technician will provide support to the Eielson AFB natural resources program through various surveys, invasive species management, and recreation area management. Survey tasks will include the completion of various acoustic bat and migratory bird surveys, while working closely with the Eielson AFB biologist. The technician will also assist with the monitoring and management of invasive plant species (primarily choke cherry trees), which will require the use of chainsaws and brush cutters. They will also help with recreational area and trail maintenance. Additional surveys alongside USFWS staff may also be available, and backcountry hiking and camping may be required. Once hired, wildlife and ATV safety training will be provided. A majority of the work will be conducted outdoors, and will entail either working alongside other technicians/managers and/or independently, as necessary. All necessary personal protective equipment will be provided.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be physically capable of working independently in remote outdoor locations under varying weather conditions. Field activities include frequent hiking while carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Pursuing a B.S. in a natural resources-, environmental compliance-, or ecosystem science-related field.
  • Must have an interest in pursuing a natural resource-related career.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for operating federal vehicles, including cars.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in a natural resources-, environmental compliance-, or ecosystem science-related field.
  • Experience with migratory bird surveys
  • Experience using GPS equipment and GIS software
  • Experience using chainsaws and hand-tools
  • Experience with ATVs

PAY RATE
Pay rate is $37,000-$40,000 annual and the work period will not exceed 120 working days.
