Wetlands & Wildlife, Inc., an environmental consulting firm located near the border of King and Snohomish Counties, Washington is seeking a Wetland Ecologist to join its small team to provide technical expertise and services related to regulated Critical Areas such as, wetlands, streams, rivers, lakes, and protected wildlife habitat throughout the Puget Sound region of western Washington. The Wetland Ecologist will partner with existing staff Ecologists to assist a variety of client types with obtaining land use and building development permits, while ensuring that all federal, state, and local environmental regulations are adhered to.

Qualifications:

The selected candidate for this Wetland Ecologist position will have previous professional experience delineating wetlands, preferably in the Pacific Northwest region. The selected candidate must be a quick learner with a very strong work ethic, have a very strong attention to detail, be highly motivated, be highly organized with the ability to handle a heavy workload by prioritizing project demands, and have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal). Strong technical writing skills are mandatory, and previous computer-aided drawing skills are also highly preferred. The selected candidate will have previous private environmental consulting experience or experience working for a regulatory permitting agency in an environmental review capacity. Relevant experience may include, but may not be limited to, preparing project documents in accordance with the following: local Puget Sound cities and counties (Critical Areas Ordinances, Shoreline Management Programs, and SEPA); Army Corps of Engineers requirements; Washington State Department of Ecology requirements; and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife requirements.

Primary Duties:

Primary duties for this Wetland Ecologist position will include the following: wetland determinations / delineations per the Army Corps Regional Supplement (2010); wetland ratings/classifications using the Washington State Department of Ecology Wetland Rating Form (2014 version); Ordinary High Water Mark delineations of streams, rivers, lakes, and marine waters; ecological functional assessments; fish and wildlife habitat assessments; compensatory mitigation planning and design; preparation of detailed technical written documents which outline findings of the field determinations and assessments; and preparation of computer-aided maps to produce Project Site Plans, Critical Areas Maps, and Schematic Mitigation / Restoration Plans.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Wetland Science, Biology, or a related field
  • Minimum of three years of experience performing the “Primary Duties” listed above for a private environmental consulting or governmental agency
  • Excellent technical writing skills and experience preparing documents for multi-agency review
  • Strong plant identification skills specific to native vegetation in the Pacific Northwest (Puget Sound region)
  • Proficiency and demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Experience using Trimble Geo xH GPS units to collect accurate field data
  • Experience with computer-aided mapping software strongly preferred (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, or similar)
  • Experience using a compass for navigation while on project sites
  • Good physical condition and ability to walk on uneven terrain for long periods of time
  • Ability / willingness to work in all weather conditions, often in dense vegetation using a machete
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license and a reliable method of transportation
  • Excellent professional references with direct knowledge of your work abilities and personal attributes

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $22.00 per hour
