The Department of Education & Early Learning’s (DEEL) mission is to ensure that all Seattle children have the greatest opportunity to succeed in school and in life, ultimately helping scholars graduate from school, ready for college, and a career. As part of this mission, DEEL is hosting the Upward Bound program. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance and graduation. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

We are looking for multiple temporary Tutors to support the Upward Bound Program in Seattle. In this role, you will be responsible for mentoring, tutoring, and providing instructional aid to support 9th – 12th grade students enrolled in the program. During summer, there is also a role in supporting recent high school graduates in successfully transitioning to college-level coursework and expectations. You will work with the Academic Youth Counselor and Youth Instructors, mentoring students facing barriers to progress through the academic pipeline so they may succeed in high school and beyond. This position will provide you with the opportunity to build leadership skills and gain experience in working with diverse youth from underserved communities.

Here’s what you’ll be doing to support the Upward Bound program:

• Providing one-on-one and small group tutoring to 9th-12th grade students in Math, Science, English, Spanish, or other foreign languages
• Supporting leadership development, college and career readiness, goal setting, college research, financial aid, and Life Skills by conducting workshops
• Maintaining accurate records of tutoring and workshop activities by students and volunteers
• Representing DEEL through exceptional service to students

Your success in this role will depend on your:

• Experience as a successful program participant in Upward Bound or a similar program so that you can support students’ success in achieving personal and programmatic goals
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
• Commitment to serving diverse families in the community
• Proficiency in one or more of the following skills areas – Math (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics), English (reading and writing), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics); foreign language

In addition to the qualities mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications (or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class):

• An Associate’s Degree

OR

In addition to:

• Proficiency in any of the following skills areas: Math, Reading, Writing, Science
• Experience in tutoring one-on-one and/or small group
• Mentoring in college preparation and leadership development settings
• Experience working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds (volunteer or paid)

As well as the following requirements:

• Ability to pass a criminal background and education check

These temporary positions are classified as a Youth Supervisor 1* and are expected to start on June 2, 2021 and end on August 10, 2021, with the possibility of being extended through the academic school year. 

Staff orientations, student orientations, meetings, etcetera may be done remotely, in-person, or some hybrid of the two based on current COVID-19 safety recommendations.
