Position Purpose

Under supervision of the Director of the QuaSR, this position tutors students and supports tutors during evening and weekend hours; coordinates online tutoring; tutors students in math and science, especially those with specific or advanced needs; ensures adequate coverage of tutor sessions; provides continuity of operations in the Director’s absence; and performs a variety of clerical and administrative support tasks, such as scheduling, taking notes, and recording data.

 

This is a part-time .75 FTE (30 hour per week), overtime eligible position in the Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Center (QuaSR) on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College.

Tutoring(approximately 20%)
  • Tutor writers as needed, especially for writers who require assistance beyond the capacity of peers or when the Writing Center is short staffed.
  • In consultation with the Director, schedule and conduct writing workshops both in the Writing Center and in classrooms.

 

Daily Operations (approximately 60%)
  • Provide close supervision of tutors in their daily work, especially during evening and weekend hours and in the absence of the Director.
    • Support new tutors in learning the Writing Center’s administrative systems, policies, and practices.
    • Ensure community building and support opportunities for student tutors.
  • Participate in the tutor hiring process, including interviewing and processing hiring documents.
  • Create quarterly tutor schedule; ensure adequate coverage of tutor sessions.
  • Match student writers with tutors.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests from students, staff, and faculty; direct communications to the Director as appropriate.
  • Coordinate online tutoring for distance learning.
  • As directed, schedule tutor staff meetings, prepare agendas, take notes, and distribute minutes.
  • Record participation numbers and other data for Writing Center workshops, events, tutoring sessions, etc.
  • Order office supplies and ensure accessible furniture placement, tidiness, etc.
  • Act swiftly as mandatory reporter of college Title IX and non-discrimination policy and procedure; refer students to CARE Team.
  • In the absence of the Director, lead and execute protocols and procedures in emergent situations, including emergency evacuation, shelter-in-place, etc.; report student conduct as per college policy; report aggressive/physically threatening conduct as per college policy.

 

Develop Resource and Outreach Materials (approximately 20%)
  • Under the guidance of the Director, develop and maintain instructional/informational materials for student writers.
  • Design informational and marketing materials to promote Writing Center hours, services, resources, and events.
  • Provide informational material to college marketing and web team, and to partners across the college (academic advising, housing, academic deans, etc.).
  • Train and guide tutors in the creation of promotional material including social media posts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent knowledge of accurate, precise written English as a vehicle for the communication of ideas, especially in a college setting.
  • Ability to tutor students at all stages of writing.
  • Ability to mentor, guide, and supervise a team with diverse aptitudes, dispositions, and range of employment experience.
  • Ability to respond diplomatically to inquiries and requests, to provide accurate and timely information, and to persist in a dynamic, changing, and unpredictable work environment.
  • Ability to attend to details, to coordinate tasks and activities, to record data, and to write and edit effectively.
  • Ability to mentor and reinforce inclusive and welcoming workplace policies and practices.
  • Ability to follow-through and take responsibility for work assignments.
  • Skill using Windows and Mac operating and communication and data storage tools, such as Microsoft 365, including SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.
  • Ability to understand and execute: protocols of emergency and safety plans; protocols of workplace/learning place misconduct including disruptive or aggressive conduct.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends in a mostly in-person workplace.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in writing, creative writing, literature, humanities, or other field related to strong knowledge of writing.
  • One year of experience as a writing tutor.

 

 

Salary and Benefits:

$2,961.00 – $3,970.50 per month of part-time work + excellent benefits including paid sick and vacation leave; paid campus holidays; a generous medical, dental, life, and disability insurance package; and a tuition waiver program.
