Duties

The position is part of the Tacoma Smelter Plume (TSP) team within the Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP). Asarco operated a smelter in Tacoma for nearly 100 years. Ecology is addressing the legacy of contamination from the smelter as part of the Tacoma Smelter Plume project (TSP). The TSP Yard Cleanup Program is focused on soil sampling and remediation of residential properties. Nearly 1200 properties qualify for soil replacement. The TSP Yard Program is a high priority project for the Toxics Cleanup Program covering two regions – the Northwest Regional Office (NWRO) and the Southwest Regional Office (SWRO). Funding for this work comes from the Asarco bankruptcy settlement.

Some of the key work activities include:

  • Home visits with the Field Coordinator to help homeowners understand their cleanup plan, do a walk-through of the yard, and a pre-construction walk-through with the cleanup contractor.
  • Coordinating mailings and knock and talks to offer soil cleanup to homeowners in Tacoma.
  • Coordinating with local health departments to answer health questions from the public.
  • Planning and preparing cleanup team for annual or biannual public meetings about cleanup progress.
  • Planning and preparing cleanup team for pre-construction neighborhood meetings before each round of cleanup work.
  • Tracking signed property access agreements and other paperwork.
  • Responding to calls from homeowners and residents.
  • Coordinating post-cleanup surveys, entering data, and writing recommendations for program improvements.
  • Designing and updating the TSP yard cleanup program webpages, ListServ’s and blog.
  • Designing, updating and printing handouts, fact sheets, letters, postcards, door hangers and other materials for the program.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Option 1: A Bachelor’s degree involving a major study in environmental, physical, or natural science, education, communications or closely related field AND three years of professional experience involving environmental analysis or control, environmental planning, environmental education, community outreach, or communications activities and conflict resolution. or equivalent education/experience.

Option 2: Additional qualifying experience will substitute, year for year, for education.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Knowledge of MTCA public involvement process.
  • Understanding of public involvement, risk communication, behavior change, and environmental justice best practices.
  • Experience with environmental and/or public health outreach and education planning and implementation.
  • Experience with outcome evaluation and tracking.
  • Writing and editing skills.
