Job Summary

Fundamental Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the research, development, and implementation of operations-related sustainability practices across campus. They will analyze and recommend sustainability best practices, unique to the IUPUI campus, across a variety of areas in campus operations, including waste and recycling, food procurement and food waste, transportation, landscape practices, procurement, energy, water, and the built environment.
  • Responsible for working with campus partners to coordinate decarbonization initiatives. They will assist in the creation of a campus-wide climate action plan with the goal of carbon neutrality by 2040 and ensuing tracking, reporting, and plan updates.
  • Responsible for leading the annual submission of the STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System) Report and THE Impact Rankings, including coordinating the gathering of information and data across campus.
  • Creates educational opportunities for students in any aspect of their work where it is possible. They will directly mentor and supervise IUPUI Sustainability student interns.
  • Oversees sustainability engagement programs and/or initiatives, including green certification, outreach campaigns, sustainability continuing education and professional development courses, environmental quality and land use, resource use and recycling, transportation, etc.
  • Develops and presents project and program proposals, plans and specifications, cost estimates, and budget recommendations; engages university and external/community constituents in sustainability efforts.
  • Manages data acquisition, tracking, and reporting of campus sustainability. Evaluates and tracks success metrics, impact, and outcomes for programs and initiatives.
  • Reports national sustainability rankings and provides plans and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Reviews and monitors projects in progress to ensure budget control, timely completion, and adherence to outlined objectives and strategic goals. Develops and proposes solutions and implements modifications as appropriate, escalating highly complex matters as needed.
  • Researches industry policies and best practices in sustainability and incorporates findings into educational outreach.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level Sustainability Specialists.
  • May make procedural and process recommendations to supervisor for improved operational efficiency.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability science, education, policy, or a related field

Preferred

  • Master’s degree 

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in environmental science, sustainability science, education, policy, or a related field

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Preferred

  • Recognized sustainability certification: SEA or SEP; LEED GA or LEED AP, or other sector-appropriate certification
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.

  • Experience using geographic information systems (GIS) and statistical software to summarize and analyze data

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
