The Sustainability Program Lead (Planner 3) will provide advanced professional planning work in the area of sustainability. You will be responsible for performing a wide range of functions including design, review, and implementation of sustainability projects.

Position Summary

Bring your passion for Sustainability and your desire to help make Pierce County a great community to live now and into the future.  Success in this role will initially be measured by your ability to help develop and implement a Sustainability plan for Pierce County. Your knowledge of sustainability practices and your ability to work with local, regional, and national partners as we seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will be key.  You will lead a team of sustainability professional work to implementing sustainability priorities.  You will be looked upon as the County’s sustainability liaison , and your ability to develop implementation strategies, research, develop plans, and communicate in writing and verbally will aide in your long-term success.  Come be a champion for implementing sustainability practices across the County.  

Core Daily Responsibilities:
 

  • Integrate sustainability into County plans, programs, policies and performance measures.
  • Work cross departmentally as well as with local, regional, and national partners to develop strategies and initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Provide guidance and analysis to co-workers and community members on sustainability priorities.
  • Lead implementation of County sustainability plan.
  • Provides awareness of proposed sustainability standards, trends and technologies.
  • Manage program development and implementation
  • Serve as subject matter expert for assigned Sustainability projects and programs.
  • Provides consultation to County departments on sustainability matters.
  • Implement countywide, departmental, and division level sustainability actions.
  • Serve as the County’s sustainability liaison with public, private sector, and sustainability networks.
  • Develop, and prepare policies including drafting code amendments, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Interpret local, state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines as they relate to sustainability and stay abreast of various legislative changes.
  • Communicate and engage with the public; deliver presentations.
  • Lead departmental assessments and programs, conducting research, collecting and analyzing data to improve operations, efficiency and cost, incorporating sustainability elements.
  • Provide guidance and technical expertise, and training to staff.
  • Work with others across departments and organizations on the development of various plans.
  • Coordinate teams across multiple departments to advance proposals relating to sustainability projects.
  • Participate in and lead the preparation and presentation of reports and information and present to County Officials, departments, external entities, and the general public regarding a wide range of sustainability functions and other related areas.
  • Participate in the preparation and monitoring of program and project budget.
  • Assign work to a specific work unit and ensure tasks are completed correctly and timely.

Qualifications

Recruiting Requirements:

PREFERRED RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy or Sustainability or related field; and, three years of related sustainability work OR any equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Positions in specific program areas may require program-related experience, education, and/or training. Experience in local, county, or state sustainability work is desired.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of all required background checks may be required prior to employment. Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s license, or the ability to obtain the license within 30 days of employment, or otherwise meet the travel requirements of the position.
