Job Summary

The Sustainability Manager will develop and implement strategic goals over a multi-year horizon that reflect the University’s priorities and the agenda set by the President’s Commission on Sustainability (PCS). The Manager will work independently to foster collaborative partnerships with administrators, faculty, staff and students from all University colleges, divisions, and departments to ensure recommended strategies and initiatives are implemented consistent with operational objectives, priorities and resource constraints.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight of all sustainability plans, programs and initiatives, including development, construction, and programming of the Center for a Sustainable Future.  Seek to involve all Colleges and Divisions in the Center and provide long-term operational oversight of the Center.
  • Oversee implementation, compliance and Reporting on CSULB’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan to meet the university’s 2030 and 2040 carbon neutrality and resilience goals and targets. Work to obtain necessary funding for programs.
  • Manage and oversee data collection, tracking, and reporting related to sustainability programs, plans and assessments. Supervise the work of the Sustainability Analyst and student assistants. Provide oversight and management of department budget.  Coordinate data collection with campus utility manager. Serve as permanent Co-Chair of the President’s Commission on Sustainability (PCS).
  • Manage efforts to raise CSULB’s sustainability leadership profile through communications and outreach, including developing and implementing strategies for increasing the university’s rating in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS). Manage media communications around work by the department including department website, newsletter, and social media.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Proven technical writing skills including grant proposal writing, news releases, marketing bulletins. Basic knowledge of energy regulations and current State Energy Reduction Targets.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university’s commitment to a “vision of excellence.”

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or a related field with a minimum of four (4) years of experience working in Sustainability Education and/or Project Implementation required. Master’s Degree preferred. 

Licenses / Certificates

LEED Certification preferred.
