Position Summary

The University at Buffalo Regional Institute (UBRI), a major planning and public policy center at the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning, seeks applicants for a Sustainability and Resiliency Planner. The successful applicant will play an instrumental role in our sustainability and resilience work, which includes implementing the award-winning regional sustainability plan One Region Forward (www.oneregionforward.org). This position will advance regional sustainability by assisting municipalities in Erie and Niagara counties increase their resiliency through planning, policy adoption, and project implementation. This includes participation in programs like the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Climate Smart Communities program, the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Clean Energy Communities program, and other efforts to help New York communities increase their resilience.

Duties as a Sustainability and Resilience Planner will primarily include conducting outreach and delivering technical assistance related to climate action planning, clean energy projects, and resilience. The duties will include:

  • Assist local governments with understanding and completing the required actions to become NYS DEC “Climate Smart Communities” certified and NYSERDA “Clean Energy Communities” designated.
  • Assist local governments in completing local greenhouse gas emissions inventories, benchmarking the energy use of municipal buildings, and assisting communities in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency upgrades and renewable energy projects.
  • Support the creation of community task forces and community campaigns that promote community-wide embrace of climate action planning and policies.
  • Assist communities in increasing the deployment of alternative fuel vehicles and associated fueling infrastructure.
  • Conduct local on-site and virtual training and workshops to groups of interested local officials and community stakeholders on various sustainability and resilience-related topics.
  • Identify and connect communities with relevant sustainability, clean energy, and resilience programs and grant opportunities.
  • Other research on issues related to sustainability and resilience as directed by faculty and staff affiliated with the UBRI.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in urban planning, architecture, environmental science or a related field and at least three years’ experience in sustainability/energy planning
  • Must be knowledgeable about climate action planning, clean energy, local government operations in New York State
  • Must have strong writing, project management, and public speaking skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in urban planning, architecture, environmental sciences, or a related field plus one-year experience in sustainability/energy planning

Salary Range
Commensurate with experience

Work Hours

9:00 AM -5:00 PM, 

occasional travel, evenings and weekends
